February 7th, 2012 No comments

PICKERINGTON, Ohio — The fastest amateur dirt-track racers on the planet will converge on the Illinois State Fairgrounds in Springfield, Ill., May 29-June 1 for the premier annual amateur championship event: the American Motorcyclist Association (AMA) Dirt Track Grand Championships.

“The AMA Dirt Track Grand Championships are one of the oldest and most prestigious amateur motorsports racing events in the country,” said AMA Director of Racing Joe Bromley. “We’re excited to bring the event back to Springfield, Ill., home to the world-famous Springfield Mile and the location of many storied dirt-track races. This will be an incredible week of racing that will showcase the fastest amateur racers in the country.”

Longtime dirt-track promoter Steve Nace of Steve Nace Racing will promote the event.

“I’m very excited to work with the AMA on the 2012 AMA Dirt Track Grand Championships,” Nace said. “The history and status of this event are second to none in the world of amateur dirt track, and we will work hard to surpass racers’ and fans’ expectations for another great year.”

The AMA Dirt Track Grand Championships crown amateur and youth champions in individual dirt-track disciplines, including half-mile, TT and short-track events. Amateur racers also compete in mile events. In addition, AMA Grand Championships are awarded to the riders in each class who have the highest point totals across all disciplines.

The fastest riders in premier classes also compete for the AMA Dirt Track Horizon Award, which honors the amateur racer poised for success on the pro level.

Racers field both traditional dirt-trackers and the latest DTX motorcycles, which begin as stock motocross bikes that are then fitted with dirt-track tires, suspension and other modifications.

AMA AND KTM ANNOUNCE BIKE WINNER IN 2011 AMA KTM NATIONAL DUAL SPORT TRAIL RIDING SERIES

January 31st, 2012 No comments

PICKERINGTON, Ohio — American Motorcyclist Association (AMA) member Randy Odom of St. Louis will take his dual-sport passion to an entirely new level this summer. That’s because the 29-year-old Odom just got an unexpected bonus for riding in last year’s AMA KTM National Dual Sport Trail Riding Series: a 2012 KTM 350 EXC-F from 2011 series sponsor KTM North America.

The annual AMA drawing, conducted by independent auditing and accounting firm Plante & Moran of Columbus, Ohio, included participants in all of the AMA events on the national dual-sport calendar.

“Man, this is awesome,” said Odom, whose current bike is a 10-year old 125cc two-stroke. “My boss got me into dual sports, and I’ve been having the best time ever. Everybody on these rides is great. They’re friendly. They’re helpful. Everyone is a die-hard rider. The riding is super challenging, but without the full-on pressure of a flat-out race. It’s great. I can’t think of a better time on a motorcycle.”

KTM North America Inc. President Jon-Erik Burleson said he’s excited to see the 350 EXC-F go to someone who appreciates the new bike as much as Odom.

“It’s great that someone like Randy, who has wanted to be a part of the KTM family for so long, can now count himself among the orange-bleeders,” Burleson said. “These guys are the heart and soul of our customer base. I hope Randy enjoys his new KTM for years to come.”

Odom, a long-time off-road rider, says the people who ride and organize the individual events on the AMA’s national dual-sport calendar represent some of motorcycling’s friendliest people. He said one of his favorite rides is the Show Me 200, put on by the Midwest Trail Riders Association in Bixby, Mo.

“I loved it,” Odom said. “I rode that, and I got hooked. It’s all types of terrain. It has the best of everything. Maybe best of all, I get to keep my wheels on the ground and stay pretty safe. My wife definitely approves! In fact, I just sent my check off to ride the 2012 Show Me 200. Plus, at all these events, we appreciate the AMA and the clubs that are part of the AMA and everything the AMA does for riders.”

With the 2012 season set to begin soon, stay tuned for exciting news on this year’s dual-sport series, including a full schedule and more. Keep an eye on AmericanMotorcyclist.com for the latest news and updates.

AMA MID-AMERICA XC CHAMPIONSHIP IS AMA FEATURED SERIES FOR 2012

January 27th, 2012 No comments

PICKERINGTON, Ohio — The American Motorcyclist Association (AMA) welcomes the AMA Mid America XC Championship as an AMA Featured Series for 2012. The 10-round hare scrambles series includes events in Indiana and Illinois from March through October.

The AMA Mid America XC Championship includes both open cross-country style course sections as well as tighter hare scrambles trail. It is promoted by Mike Gibbs and Mid America XC in Monrovia, Ind. The full schedule is below.

“We’re very happy to have Mike on board with this AMA Featured Series,” said AMA Director of Racing Joe Bromley. “The AMA Mid America XC Championship has a reputation for premier Midwest woods racing, with competitive classes at every level of age, skill and displacement. It provides excellent opportunities for AMA members to compete, and we’re pleased to elevate the series for 2012.”

Gibbs said he has seen steady expansion of the series since it was launched in 2010. He said much of that is due to Mid America XC’s philosophy of putting riders first.

“My sons have raced hare scrambles, and I have a long sprint-car racing background, so we definitely bring a racer’s perspective to promotion,” Gibbs said. “Improving organization, registration, track quality and definitely payouts and recognition, have played a role in our growing rider counts. For example, our pro purse is a set amount each round — it isn’t dependent on rider counts — and every other class down to beginner receives product awards in addition to trophies.”

Gibbs said that AMA sanctioning, including stepping up as an AMA Featured Series for 2012, has been a critical component to his series’ success.

“AMA affiliation has always been important to us,” Gibbs said. “While we’re out here competing, the AMA is in Washington, D.C., protecting our rights to ride and to race. The recent success of fixing the lead law to exempt youth-model motorcycles and all-terrain vehicles from the ban was a perfect example of that. Without the youth classes, our sport can’t survive.”

PICKERINGTON, Ohio — The American Motorcyclist Association (AMA) and event promoter North American Action Sports (NAAS) have announced a new date and venue for the 2012 AMA Ice Race Grand Championships, which will crown the AMA’s first amateur champions of the year. The amateur championship event will take place Feb. 4-5 at the Sugarbush Golf and Country Club with racing to take place on Potters Lake in Davison, Mich.

“Motorcycle competition is as diverse as it is exciting, and that is no more apparent than at the AMA Ice Race Grand Championships,” said AMA Director of Racing Joe Bromley. “We’re looking forward to once again working with NAAS to provide a national-championship program to this country’s top ice racers.”

The AMA Ice Race Grand Championships feature classes for riders from 4 years old to 50-plus competing on bikes that range from lightly modified off-road machines to full-on, purpose-built ice racers. Riders will battle for AMA national No. 1 plates in a number of classes. The top riders at the event also will compete for the AMA Ice Racer of the Year award, given to the most impressive rider on the ice, while the youth riders will chase the honor of AMA Youth Rider of the Year.

We can’t wait for Feb. 4-5 when we can kick off the 2012 racing season in style.”

A rain-out date is schedule for the following weekend in case weather doesn’t cooperate with the original Feb. 4-5 date.

“While the racers are the reason for the AMA Ice Race Grand Championships, this family event truly has something for everyone,” Grzebinski said. “The Sugarbush Golf and Country Club provides the perfect location to combine racing with casual fun and dining.”

Insane Motor Race – Isle of Man TT

The Isle of Man TT was for many years the most prestigious motor-cycle race in the world.
Between 1907 and 2009 there have been 237 deaths during official practices or races on the Snaefell Mountain Course.

Snaefell Mountain Course or Mountain Course is a road-racing circuit used for the Isle of Man TT and Manx Grand Prix Races held in the Isle of Man from 1911 and 1923 respectively. The racing is held on public roads closed for racing by an Act of Tynwald (the parliament of the Isle of Man). It is the oldest motor-cycle racing circuit still in use. The official lap record for the Snaefell Mountain Course is 17 Minutes and 12.30 seconds at an average speed of 131.578 mph (211.754 km/h) set by John McGuinness during the 2009 Senior TT Race.

SUZUKI WITHDRAWS FROM MOTOGP

November 18th, 2011 No comments

Suzuki has confirmed that it is pulling out of MotoGP but insists its absence will be temporary and that a 2014 return is on the cards.

The future of Suzuki’s MotoGP program had been in doubt for months, with the reduction to a single works bike this season widely regarded as a precursor to a full withdrawal.

It did not join fellow works teams Honda, Ducati and Yamaha in publically testing a 1000cc bike for the 2012 rules, although there were suggestions that such a bike was under development and that the factory team would start the season with its old 800cc machine before switching to the new bike later in the year.

But today the company issued a statement blaming global economic circumstances for the decision to suspend its MotoGP program for at least two seasons.

KRAWIEC RIDES HARLEY-DAVIDSON TO NHRA WORLD CHAMPIONSHIP

November 14th, 2011 No comments

Hines Wins All-Harley Final at Pomona, Krawiec Claims His Second Crown

Pomona, California (November 13, 2011)  – Harley-Davidson® Screamin’ Eagle®/Vance & Hines rider Ed Krawiec is the 2011 NHRA Pro Stock Motorcycle world champion. Krawiec clinched the title with a second-round win at the Automobile Club of Southern California NHRA Finals at Auto Club Raceway that eliminated Lucas Oil Buell rider Hector Arana Jr., the only rider in the field with a chance to overtake Krawiec for the championship. Krawiec advanced to the final round and lost to his Harley-DavidsonScreamin’ Eagle/Vance & Hines teammate Andrew Hines, who finished the season third in points.

“I think this is really a statement on the season, to end it with an all-Harley final and the championship, and with Willie G. Davidson and the bunch from Harley here to see it,” said Krawiec. “This championship validates the championship I won in 2008 when I didn’t win any races. For Andrew and I to go to the final two races and be winner and runner-up is amazing. Plus to have the opportunity to race with such great competitors, I couldn’t ask for anything more.”

Krawiec’s championship is the fifth for the Harley-DavidsonScreamin’ Eagle/Vance & Hines team. Hines won the title three years in a row from 2004 through 2006, and Krawiec earned his first championship in 2008. Krawiec won four times during the 2011 season, at Gainesville, Norwalk, Charlotte, and Las Vegas. He also set a new Pro Stock Motorcycle speed record of 199.26 mph at Gainesville.

The Harley-DavidsonScreamin’ Eagle/Vance & Hines team dominated the Pro Stock Motorcycle field at the NHRA Finals. Hines was the top qualifier, riding his Harley-Davidson® V-Rod® to a 6.820-second elapsed time (ET) in the first run on Thursday. Arana Jr. qualified second at 6.832 seconds, while Krawiec qualified a V-Rod® third at 6.850 seconds.

Krawiec began Sunday eliminations with a 69-point lead over Arana Jr., and opened with a win over Geico Suzuki rider Karen Stoffer. Arana Jr. kept pace by defeating Next Level Racing Suzuki rider Justin Finely. Krawiec ended the title suspense in round two by defeating the 2010 champion, Nitrofish Suzuki rider LE Tonglet. Krawiec then put an exclamation point on the day by defeating Arana Jr. in the semi-final round.

Hines blasted through Sunday eliminations with wins over Michael Phillips on The Edge Suzuki, Buell rider Angie Smith, and Lucas Oil Buell rider Hector Arana Sr., setting up an all-Harley final-round match with Krawiec. Hines got the win when Krawiec fouled at the starting line. It was the second win of the season for Hines, who also won the final at Houston.

“What a phenomenal weekend,” said Hines. “This has been a bookend season for the Screamin’ Eagle team, and to end the season with two all-Harley finals, and the championship for Harley-Davidson. This team is a force to be reckoned with.”

The final Pro Stock Motorcycle points tally has Krawiec in first place with 2,691 points. Arana Jr. is second with 2601 points, followed by Hines with 2,511 points, Matt Smith with 2,456 points, and Arana Sr. in fifth place with 2389 points.

KRAWIEC WINS ALL-HARLEY FINAL AT LAS VEGAS NHRA NATIONALS

November 1st, 2011 No comments

Krawiec Rides Harley-Davidson V-Rod to 69-Point Countdown Lead

LAS VEGAS, Nevada (October 30, 2011)  – Harley-Davidson® Screamin’ Eagle®/Vance & Hines rider Ed Krawiec rode a Harley-Davidson® V-Rod® to win the Pro Stock Motorcycle eliminations at the Big O Tires NHRA Nationals at Las Vegas Motor Speedway. Krawiec defeated his Harley-Davidson® Screamin’ Eagle®/Vance & Hines teammate Andrew Hines in the final. With one event remaining on the season schedule, Krawiec holds a 69-point lead in the Full Throttle NHRA Countdown to the Championship.

“This puts us in a great position for the championship, but we need to stay on our game,” said Krawiec, who won the NHRA Pro Stock Motorcycle world championship in 2008. “We can’t give up any points in qualifying, and need to just keep doing what we’ve been doing.”

At the beginning of Sunday eliminations, Krawiec held a nine-point lead over Lucas Oil Buell rider Hector Arana, Jr., who gained a point on the Harley-Davidson rider in qualifying with a track-record 6.879-second run on Saturday to earn the No. 1 qualifying spot. Krawiec qualified second at 6.894 seconds. Hines qualified fourth at 6.902 seconds.

Krawiec defeated Vroom Racing Buell rider David Hope in the first round on Sunday, and got a win over Nitro Fish Suzuki rider LE Tonglet in round two.  Arana Jr. lost in the second round to Angie Smith, handing Krawiec an opportunity to add to his points lead. The Screamin’ Eagle rider took full advantage, with a big win over Hector Arana Sr. on the second Lucas Oil Buell in round three, and a victory over his teammate in the final, with a 6.936-second run that was his quickest of the day. It was Krawiec’s fourth win of the season and 11th of his career.

“I had a great Harley-Davidson to ride all weekend,” said Krawiec. “Matt Hines put a new-style exhaust system on the bike that was a big improvement in performance. Other than that, we’ve just been consistent on the lights and smooth down the track. Over the long haul, that’s what it takes to win.”

Hines worked through Sunday eliminations with wins over Rum Bum Buell rider Bailey Whitaker, Suzuki Extended Protection rider Jim Underdahl, and Angie Smith before facing Krawiec in a final-round match for the first time since 2009.

“We didn’t have time to dyno-test this new exhaust, so we tried it on my bike first in qualifying before we put it on Ed’s V-Rod, because we didn’t want to take a chance with his points lead,” said Hines. “It made a positive difference right away. Ed is sitting in a great position and I can’t wait to get to Pomona and race this Harley. Maybe I’ll have a chance to knock off Arana and help him with the championship.”

With one Countdown event left on the 2011 schedule, Krawiec leads the Pro Stock Motorcycle class by 69 points, with 2,589 total points. Arana Jr. is second with 2,520 points. Matt Smith, who lost in round one at Las Vegas, is third with 2,403 points. Hines moves up to fourth place with 2,384 points. Geico Suzuki rider Karen Stoffer failed to qualify at Las Vegas and drops to fifth place with 2,329.

The NHRA Full Throttle Drag Racing Series returns to action on November 10-13 at the 47th annual Automobile Club of Southern California NHRA Finals at Auto Club Raceway in Pomona, California.
