KRAWIEC AND HARLEY V-ROD® LEAD NHRA COUNTDOWN BATTLE

Harley-Davidson Screamin’ Eagle Team Heads to Round Four with a 35-Point Lead

MOHNTON, Pa. (October 3, 2011) –  Harley-Davidson® Screamin’ Eagle®/Vance & Hines rider Ed Krawiec retained his lead in the NHRA Full Throttle Countdown to the Championship, winning one round of eliminations at the rain-delayed Auto-Plus® NHRA Nationals at Maple Grove Raceway. The Pro Stock Motorcycle class ran one round on Sunday, and then continued racing on Monday.

Krawiec won on Sunday, defeating Shawn Gann on the Dirt World Nation Buell. On Monday, Krawiec lost in the second round to SAF & Motorcycles Specialties rider Jerry Savoie. Krawiec’s 7.120-second ET was his slowest run of the weekend, and not enough to beat 6.949 pass by Savoie.

“I had him covered in round two, and then when I shifted to third gear, the motorcycle shut down for three or four tenths of a second,” said Krawiec. “In three years of riding the Harley V-Rod® I’ve never had an electrical problem, but it seems that’s what happened today. The bike started right back up, but by then the round was lost. We’ll figure out what happened and be ready for the next race. The good news is we came in with a nice cushion in the points, and we used it today.”

Harley-Davidson® Screamin’ Eagle®/Vance & Hines rider Andrew Hines won two rounds on the team’s other Harley V-Rod, defeating Nitro Fish Suzuki rider LE Tonglet in round one and The Edge Suzuki rider Michael Phillips in round two. Hines set a new personal ET record at 6.794 seconds in the second round, the fourth quickest time in class history. Hines lost in the third round to Lucas Oil Buell rider Hector Arana Jr.

Arana Jr. defeated Buell rider Matt Smith in the final to win the second event of his career.

After three of six Countdown events Krawiec leads the Pro Stock Motorcycle class with 2362 points. Arana Jr. moves from third to second place with 2327 points, and Smith is third with 2292 points. Geico Suzuki rider Karen Stoffer, who lost in round one at Maple Grove, drops to fourth with 2261 points. Hines is fifth with 2253 points.

The fourth round of the Countdown to the Championship, the 27th annual NHRA Arizona Nationals, takes place Oct. 14-16 at Firebird International Raceway in Chandler, Ariz.

COOLBETH TAKES FACTORY HARLEY TO SIXTH PLACE AT CALISTOGA

Johnson Wins and Takes Grand National Points Lead from Mees

CALISTOGA, Calif. (October 1, 2011) –Harley-Davidson® Screamin’ Eagle® Factory rider Kenny Coolbeth raced to a sixth-place finish in the AMA Pro Harley-Davidson Insurance Flat Track Championship event at Calistoga Speedway. Coolbeth placed second in his heat race and won the Dash for Cash bonus sprint. The 25-lap main was won by Zanotti Racing/Schaeffer`s Harley-Davidson rider Jake Johnson, who took the series points lead with one race left on the 2011 schedule.

Coolbeth’s Harley-Davidson XR750 was one of the fastest motorcycles on the half-mile track during qualifying, and at the start of the main the Factory Harley rider joined a lead pack that also included Johnson, Rogers Lake/Blue Springs Harley-Davidson rider Jared Mees, Kings Kustom/White’s Harley-Davidson Sammy Halbert, and White’s Harley-Davidson rider Matt Weidman, who led the pack on the first lap. Johnson took the lead on lap four, with Halbert and Coolbeth in close pursuit. As the leaders crossed the line following lap six, Mees crashed and the race was stopped by a red flag. His Harley-Davidson too damaged to continue, Mees was allowed to re-start the race from the back of the pack on a back-up motorcycle. Johnson took the lead on the re-start and opened a gap on Halbert and Coolbeth that grew to almost two seconds. Coolbeth struggled with poor traction from mid-race on, and at one point almost lost control of his motorcycle before dropping back to sixth place. Johnson won with a 1.855-second lead over Halbert. Fasthog.com/American Harley-Davidson rider Bryan Smith was third, followed by Kawasaki rider Luke Gough, Brad Baker on the Lloyd Brothers Ducati, and Coolbeth.

“We had a really great bike early in the program, but decided to change the rear tire before the main, and that did not work out for us,” said Coolbeth. “I did not have good traction at the rear and was really struggling with the bike through the entire race.”

Mees, who was leading the series in points before the Calistoga race, worked his way through the pack and passed Coolbeth on the last lap for an apparent six-place finish. He was disqualified after the race, when officials ruled that because the red-flag restart occurred after five race laps were complete, the rules did not permit Mees to re-enter the race with a back-up motorcycle. Mees was credited with completing five laps, and placed 19th.

His race position and a second-place finish the Dash for Cash earned Mees five points for the evening. Johnson, the defending Grand National champion, gained 27 points with the win and third place in the Dash, and took over the points lead. With one event left in the AMA Pro Harley-Davidson Insurance Flat Track Championship series, Johnson has 357 points. Mees is second with 353 points, followed by Halbert with 349 and Coolbeth with 298.

The final race on the AMA Grand National Twins schedule is Oct. 15 on the Los Angeles County Fairplex half-mile in Pomona, Calif.

KRAWIEC MAINTAINS NHRA POINTS LEAD AT DALLAS DRAGS

September 27th, 2011 No comments

Harley V-Rod® Rider Paces NHRA Pro Stock Motorcycle Field by 67 Points

ENNIS, Texas (September 26, 2011) –  Harley-Davidson® Screamin’ Eagle®/Vance & Hines rider Ed Krawiec added to his points lead in the NHRA Full Throttle Countdown to the Championship at the AAA Texas NHRA Fall Nationals at the Texas Motorplex. Krawiec won a single round in Sunday eliminations, but his closest rival for the championship, Geico Suzuki rider Karen Stoffer, was also eliminated in the second round and failed to gain points on the Harley-Davidson® V-Rod® rider. With four rounds left on the Countdown schedule, Krawiec’s lead stands at 67 points.

“We had a strong V-Rod bike all weekend,” said Krawiec. “I had a chance to win but didn’t get the job done.”

Krawiec qualified in sixth position with a 6.867-second run on Friday. His teammate, Andrew Hines, qualified the other Harley-Davidson® Screamin’ Eagle®/Vance & Hines V-Rod in second position at 6.850 seconds. Lucas Oil Buell rider Hector Arana Jr. was the top qualifier at 6.828 seconds.

On Sunday, Hines won his first-round match against Suzuki rider Steve Johnson, but lost in round two when SAF & Motorcycles Specialties rider Jerry Savoie had an outstanding 0.002-second reaction time at the start of a 6.968-second run that Hines could not match with a 0.045/6.961 pass.

“I was in my range at the start all weekend,” said Hines. “I’ve won a lot of races at .045, so I can’t hang my head about this loss. We missed a weather change here between the first and second rounds, and both bikes lost four miles per hour in top speed. The Screamin’ Eagle V-Rods were coming off the line consistently all weekend. We’ve got two strong bikes for the rest of the Countdown.”

Krawiec opened Sunday eliminations with a win over Vroom/LAT Oil Buell rider Mike Berry, but lost in round two after a late reaction time put him behind The Edge Suzuki rider Michael Phillips, who ran 0.019/7.016 to beat Krawiec’s 0.080/6.984 pass.

“I just missed on the tree in round two,” said Krawiec. “I’ve got a lot of confidence in the Screamin’ Eagle V-Rod and we are heading to Reading for the next race, a track where we usually are strong.”

Phillips defeated Arana Jr. in the final at Texas to take his first win of the season.

After two of six Countdown events Krawiec leads the Pro Stock Motorcycle class with 2295 points. Stoffer is second with 2228 points. Arana moves up to third place with 2205 points, followed by Matt Smith with 2198 points, and Hines in fifth with 2176 points. Nitrofish Suzuki rider LE Tonglet is sixth with 2164 points.

The third round of the Countdown to the Championship, the 27th annual Auto-Plus® NHRA Nationals, takes place Sept. 29-Oct. 2 at Maple Grove Raceway in Mohnton, Pa.

Krawiec and Harley Claim Top Seed for NHRA Countdown

Hines and Harley-Davidson V-Rod Top Qualifying at U.S. Nationals

INDIANAPOLIS, Ind. (September 5, 2011) –  Harley-Davidson® Screamin’ Eagle®/Vance & Hines rider Ed Krawiec won in the first round of Pro Stock Motorcycle drag racing eliminations at the Mac Tools U.S. Nationals at Lucas Oil Raceway and secured the top seed in the Full Throttle NHRA Countdown to the Championship playoff series. Krawiec earned 20 bonus points for leading the top-ten riders who will compete for the championship over the last six events of the season.

“It’s great to get that 20 points, because this is very competitive class,” said Krawiec, who took over the points lead on August 21, riding a Harley-Davidson V-Rod® motorcycle to the semi-finals at the Lucas Oil Nationals at Brainerd International Raceway. “The Screamin’ Eagle team is putting me on a great motorcycle and I think we are all feeling confident.”

Harley-Davidson® Screamin’ Eagle®/Vance & Hines rider Andrew Hines will start the countdown in fourth place. Hines made a dramatic 6.909-second pass in the final round of qualifying on Sunday to take the top position heading into Monday’s elimination rounds of the U.S. Nationals. Monday ended on a disappointing note for Hines, when his transmission locked up during his burn-out for the first round of eliminations. The crew was unable to fix the bike at the starting line.

“We really had my V-Rod dialed in and I thought we’d be the bike to beat today,” said Hines. “We tested here last week and made 13 runs, and we found the problem that was holding me back at the end of the track the last few races. So I’m feeling good heading into the Countdown. I’ve got a very strong motorcycle and I’m just 50 points behind Eddie.”

Krawiec qualified sixth for the U.S. Nationals at 6.953 seconds. He defeated Vroom Racing Buell rider David Hope in the first round of eliminations, and lost to SAF and Motorcycle Specialties rider Jerry Savoie in round two. Lucas Oil Buell rider Hector Arana Jr. defeated Savoie in the final round to win the event.

The Pro Stock Motorcycle points will re-set for the top-ten riders as the series begins the Countdown to the Championship playoffs. Riders qualifying for the Countdown are: Krawiec (2110 points), LE Tonglet (Nitrofish Suzuki, 2080), Karen Stoffer (Geico Suzuki, 2070), Hines (2060), Arana Jr. (2050), Matt Smith (Smith Racing Buell, 2040), Hector Arana Sr. (Lucas Oil Buell, 2030), Savoie (2020), Michael Phillips (The Edge Suzuki, 2010) and Jim Underdahl (Suzuki Extended Protection, 2000).

The first round of the Countdown to the Championship is the 4th annual O’Reilly Auto Parts NHRA Nationals, September 15-18, at zMAX Dragway in Charlotte, N.C.

Coolbeth Fourth in Close Race on the Springfield Mile

Veteran Willie McCoy Wins as Harley-Davidson Riders Fill Podium

SPRINGFIELD, Ill. (September 5, 2011) –Harley-Davidson® Screamin’ Eagle® Factory rider Kenny Coolbeth placed fourth as the AMA Pro Harley-Davidson Insurance Flat Track Championship Grand National Twins race on the Springfield Mile came to a dramatic finish. After a re-start for a red flag, the race came down to a five-lap sprint to the checkered flag with six riders racing elbow-to-elbow in the lead pack. Coolbeth ran as high as second place, but Harley-Davidson of Wausau rider Willie McCoy would win the race, scoring his first AMA Grand National victory in 23 years of racing as a pro. McCoy crossed the finish line just 0.011 seconds ahead of American Motorcyclist Association/Classic Harley-Davidson rider Chris Carr. Zanotti Racing/Schaeffer`s Harley-Davidson rider Jake Johnson was third, 0.064 seconds behind McCoy, with Coolbeth just 0.111 seconds back.

Coolbeth was fast all night on his Factory Harley-Davidson XR750 motorcycle, winning his heat race and claiming the pole with fast lap in the heats. At the start of the 25-lap main, a pack of six to seven riders took the point, including Coolbeth, Johnson, Carr, Fasthog.com/American Harley-Davidson rider Bryan Smith, Rogers Lake/Blue Springs Harley-Davidson rider Jared Mees, Kings Kustom/White’s Harley-Davidson Sammy Halbert and Johnny Lewis on the Scott Powersports Kawasaki. Lewis, Coolbeth, and Smith each led at least one lap, while Carr led a total of 13 laps as non-stop passing and drafting action was taking place behind the leader. The race came to a stop when Smith and Rob Pearson crashed in separate incidents on lap 21. Smith was not able to continue.

McCoy, who was not among the early race leaders, had worked through the pack and just taken the lead before the crash on lap 21. McCoy got off first on the re-start, and the 41-year-old veteran held off Coolbeth, Mees and Carr in the closing laps. Carr pulled out to attempt a drafting pass on the front straight but could not get past McCoy before the finish line. The top-ten riders in the race finished within one second of the winner.

“The Factory Harley crew gave me a great bike today and we were able to run up front, and it was typical Springfield with lots of drafting and back and forth,” said Coolbeth, who never ran lower than sixth place. “The restart kind of messed us up, because by then I had visualized the closing laps and how I wanted to get in position to win. That all went out the window. McCoy showed up late in the race and we all had a shot at him, so give him credit. It was a great race.”

Mees won the four-lap Dash for Cash bonus sprint.

Halbert finished seventh at Springfield and now leads the series by just five points. After 16 of 20 rounds in the 2011 AMA Pro Harley-Davidson Insurance Flat Track Championship, Halbert has 298 points. Mees is second with 293 points, followed by Johnson with 288 and Coolbeth with 244 points.

The next race on the AMA Grand National Twins schedule is Sept. 10 on the Knoxville Raceway half-mile in Knoxville, Iowa.

O’Hara and Fillmore Split AMA Pro Vance & Hines XR1200 Races at Indianapolis

August 31st, 2011 No comments

Runner-Up Rapp Closes Championship Gap

Milwaukee (August 29, 2011) – Tyler O’Hara and Chris Fillmore shared wins in a pair of historic AMA Pro Vance & Hines XR1200 races presented by Harley-Davidson Insurance at Indianapolis Motor Speedway August 27 and 28, as the thundering sound of Harley-Davidson racing motorcycles returned to the famous Brickyard for the first time since the track’s first year of racing in 1909.

In Saturday’s first round of the double-header, held in conjunction with the Red Bull Indianapolis GP round of the FIM MotoGP World Championship, privateer racer O’Hara, running without external sponsorship, broke through for the first AMA Pro road racing win of his career in a dramatic victory over Parts Unlimited’s Steve Rapp and Latus Motors’ Jason DiSalvo in the first of two 10-lap contests at the Speedway.

Following a first lap crash that knocked several bikes out of the race, O’Hara, Rapp, DiSalvo, Fillmore (RMR/Bruce Rossmeyer’s Daytona Racing) and Jeremy McWilliams (Harley-Davidson of Bloomington-Indiana) broke away in a five rider pack that diced for the lead until the final lap, when McWilliams, the 2010 UK XR1200 champion, tangled with Fillmore in a clash that left the championship leader on the ground and out of the race and points. O’Hara held on for a 0.048-second win over Rapp.

“It just feels really good right now,” said an emotional O’Hara in the victory circle. “This is my first AMA Pro win, and I feel phenomenal right now; it’s been a long time coming. I’ve been racing pretty much my whole life, about eighteen years, and I’ve had a lot of upsets, led a lot of big races, and never really caught a break, and it seems like this weekend I was in the right place at the right time and caught a break there at the end.”

In Sunday’s second round of the double-header, Fillmore rebounded from Saturday’s disappointment to take his fourth XR1200 series win of the season, leading Rapp across the Speedway’s yard of bricks start/finish line by 0.169 second, with O’Hara in third 1.083 seconds behind.

“My plan going into [Race 1] was to kind of play it a little bit conservative,” said Fillmore. “After the crash I had on Friday, I wasn’t sure how I was going to be on the bike. That didn’t go as planned, so [for Race 2] I came in with a game plan of trying to throw down and pull away. It didn’t happen, and those guys were right there the whole time, so we just had to race it out. It was a little stressful for me, but I wasn’t going to let them by and I was going to do everything I could to keep it out front.”

With his pair of runner-up finishes, Rapp closed Fillmore’s championship lead to 12 points going into Labor Day Weekend’s season finale. O’Hara stands third ahead of Drag Specialties’ Michael Barnes, who finished fourth in both races.

The AMA Pro Racing Vance & Hines XR1200 Series concludes the 2011 season September 3-4 at New Jersey Motorsports Park in Millville, NJ.
