Daniel Bromley Wins 2011 AMA Racing Dirt Track Horizon Award

August 4th, 2011 No comments

PICKERINGTON, Ohio — Success in professional racing not only requires speed and consistency on the track, but maturity and respect off it. At the 2011 AMA Racing Dirt Track Grand Championships, which took place July 25-31 in Du Quoin, Ill., KTM support rider Daniel Bromley displayed all those qualities to earn the 2011 AMA Racing Dirt Track Horizon Award from the American Motorcyclist Association (AMA).

AMA Racing Horizon Awards are presented annually in dirt track, motocross and roadracing to the rider showing the most promise for success in the pro ranks. The dirt-track award recipient is traditionally selected based on performance at the AMA Racing Dirt Track Grand Championships, promoted this year by North American Action Sports (NAAS).

“Although the competition at the AMA Racing Dirt Track Grand Championships features a number of extremely talented riders, some years one rider’s performance makes him a clear choice for the AMA Racing Dirt Track Horizon Award,” said AMA Track Racing Manager Ken Saillant. “No other Horizon Award contender matched Daniel’s five individual championships and two Grand Championships. In the minds of the selection committee, this made Daniel a clear choice for this prestigious award.”

At the AMA Racing Dirt Track Grand Championships, Bromley stood out among Horizon Award contenders with five championships in individual disciplines and two overall Grand Championships. Grand Championships reflect performance across all four types of dirt-track competition in a specific class.

The 16-year-old Bromley won Grand Championships in the 250cc Modified Two-stroke class and in the 250cc DTX class. His individual discipline titles were in 250cc DTX short-track and TT, 250cc Modified Two-stroke short-track and TT, and 251cc-500cc DTX TT. Bromley also raced in select 450cc Modified events.

“Ever since I was little, I would watch people I knew win the Horizon Award, and I would dream of winning it myself,” Bromley said. “It is really special to get it. It feels really good to see all of our hard work pay off.”

Bromley added that a key to his success has been the support of his family, especially his brother Joseph.

“Having a teammate is really important because you have someone you can always look to for help and advice,” Bromley said. “You can race together. You can workout together. You can work on the bikes together. Having the support of my family, including my mom and dad, has been so important, and without them I wouldn’t be able to do this.”

Bromley, whose 6-foot-3, 190-pound frame belies the typical dirt-tracker physique, says his initial professional plans include TT and short-track races, although he hopes to see the track at next year’s Hagerstown, Md., half-mile AMA Pro Racing event.

“I want to get my Pro Singles license and go pro in 2012 at the Daytona short track,” he said. “I will probably do mostly TTs and short-track races next year. My size can put me at a disadvantage on the half-mile and mile, but it really helps me on the TT and short-tracks where I can manhandle the bike a little more. I do want to do the Hagerstown half-mile next year because it’s close to my house.”

Although the AMA Horizon Award is the highest-profile special award at the AMA Racing Dirt Track Grand Championships, additional honors recognize other competitors for standout performances.

The AMA Racing Fast Brain Award, sponsored for the second year running by dirt-track tuning legend and Motorcycle Hall of Famer Bill Werner and AMA Board of Directors Chairman Stan Simpson, recognizes a rider whose speed on the track is matched by stellar grades in the classroom. The 2011 Fast Brain award was presented to Hunter Goodwin from Keenesburg, Colo.

This year marked a “first” for the AMA Racing Youth Dirt Track Rider of the Year award when it was given to two riders. Kevin Stollings won Grand Championships in 85cc DTX (9-13) and 85cc Modified (7-11), and Tyler Scott, with titles in 50cc DTX PW Shaft (4-8) and 50cc DTX PW (4-8) classes, shared the award for 2011.

Stollings said his favorite part of the week was “winning the short tracks and having to come back on the half-mile after I placed fourth and seventh on the TT.” Stollings sent out a big thank you to “my mom, my dad, my grandma, my little brother and my friend Alex.”

Scott, who will be starting kindergarten this year, said he enjoyed the week.

“My favorite thing was racing and it was very fun all week,” he said, adding that those who helped him were “just mom and dad and my dog.”

The Vet/Senior Rider of the year was awarded to Mount Pleasant, Iowa’s Tony Watkins, who won the Vet 30+ class and the Senior 40+ class.

“I came into this week wanting and hoping that I would get this Vet/Senior award,” Watkins said. “I’m on a bike every day, and I just enjoy motorcycle racing. I rode when I was younger and turned pro back in ’78. I rode for a year to year-and-a-half and then I quit racing, and didn’t pick up a motorcycle again for about 20 years. I just love this thing. I hope to keep doing it for a few more years and get the rest of the kid out of me!”

The AMA Racing Dirt Track Grand Championships crown Grand National champions based on their accumulated points in all four dirt-track disciplines: short-track, TT, half-mile and mile racing. The top riders compete for the AMA Dirt Track Horizon Award, which honors the amateur racer poised for success on the pro level. Racers field traditional dirt-trackers, all-terrain vehicles and the latest DTX-machinery. DTX bikes are a fast-growing segment of dirt-track racing. They begin as showroom-fresh motocross bikes that are then fitted with dirt-track tires, suspension and other modifications.

For more information on all the disciplines sanctioned by the AMA, see AMARacing.com.

Coolbeth Races to Eighth Place on I-96 Half-Mile

July 25th, 2011 No comments

Mees, Smith and Johnson Fill All-Harley Podium at Lake Odessa, Mich.

LAKE ODESSA, Mich. (July 24, 2011) –  Harley-Davidson® Screamin’ Eagle® Factory rider Kenny Coolbeth raced to an eighth-place finish in the Grand National Twins main at the 11th round of the AMA Pro Harley-Davidson Insurance Flat Track Championship at I-96 Speedway. The race was won by Rogers Lake/ Blue Springs Harley-Davidson rider and Michigan native Jared Mees on a Harley-Davidson XR750 motorcycle.

“We really struggled all night with bike set-up,” said Coolbeth, who won the previous race in the series at Hagerstown, Md., and has won three times at I-96 Speedway. “This track is very similar to Hagerstown and we should have been able to come in here and run fast with the same set-up, but the bike just would not handle tonight. We worked hard on suspension adjustments but couldn’t make the bike better than where we finished.”

Fast-qualifier Brad Baker put the Lloyd Brothers Motorsports/TeamHurtByAccident.com Ducati in the lead at the start of the 25-lap main on the I-96 half-mile, only to see Fasthog.com/American Harley-Davidson rider Bryan Smith get by on lap two. Mees got a bad start but worked his way into the lead by lap four, and then built a cushion of about 1.5 seconds and led to the finish. Smith settled into second place with Zanotti Racing /Schaeffer`s Harley-Davidson rider Jake Johnson right on his wheel in third place. Series points lead Sammy Halbert, on the Kings Kustom/White’s Harley-Davidson XR750, ran a distant fourth. Johnson was never able to find a way around Smith, and the top four rode the final 20 laps in this formation. Mees led Smith by 1.66 seconds at the finish. Coolbeth ran in eighth place for most of the race.

Johnson won the four-lap Dash for Cash bonus sprint.

With the win, Mees jumps from third to second place in the season standings, and now trails Halbert by just three points. After 11 of 21 rounds in the 2011 AMA Pro Harley-Davidson Insurance Flat Track Championship, Halbert has 206 points, Johnson 203 points and Smith 197 points. Coolbeth is fourth with 176 points.

The next race on the AMA Grand National Twins schedule is July 30 on the Cal Expo Fair Mile in Sacramento, Calif.

Krawiec Takes Harley V-Rod to Semi-Finals at Denver Drags

Harley-Davidson Screamin’ Eagle Riders Now Second and Fifth in Season Points

MORRISON, Colo. (July 24, 2011) –  Harley-Davidson® Screamin’ Eagle®/Vance & Hines rider Ed Krawiec raced his Harley-Davidson V-Rod® to the semi-final round of Pro Stock Motorcycle eliminations at the Mopar Mile-High NHRA Nationals at Bandimere Speedway. Krawiec also posted the top speed of the event at 185.84 mph. Karen Stoffer rode the Geico Suzuki to win the final round.

Krawiec qualified third for Sunday eliminations with an elapsed time (ET) of 7.258 seconds. Andrew Hines qualified the other Harley-Davidson® Screamin’ Eagle®/Vance & Hines V-Rod® in sixth position with a 7.276-second run. Lucas Oil Buell rider Hector Arana led all qualifiers with a 7.240-second pass in qualifying.

In Sunday eliminations, Hines (7.316) lost in the first round to Nitrofish Suzuki rider LE Tonglet (7.285).

“Facing Tonglet in the first round was luck of the draw after he qualified in the final round, a repeat of last year’s championship and one of us was going to be disappointed,” said Hines. “I had an up-and-down weekend with my riding, and I wish I had more to show for this trip to the mountain, but we have the V-Rod motorcycles running closer to each other. Now we have to re-boot for racing near sea level at Sonoma.”

Krawiec opened Sunday’s action with a win over Suzuki Extended Protection rider Jim Underdahl in round one, and advanced in round two after Tonglet fouled at the start, leaving 0.014 second early. Krawiec faced Stoffer in the semi-finals, and lost on a hole-shot. Stoffer’s 0.002-second reaction time and 7.338-second ET was just 0.0343 quicker than the 0.049/7.325 run posted by Krawiec.

“Well, Karen did not leave much on the plate with that start,” said Krawiec. “I would have liked to be a little quicker off the line, but not a lot. We are still in a tight race, and there are a lot of points left to win.”

Stoffer defeated The Edge Suzuki rider Michael Phillips in the final.

With her win at Denver, Stoffer takes the series points lead from Krawiec. After seven of 16 scheduled Pro Stock Motorcycle events, Stoffer has 599 points. Krawiec drops to second with 566 points. Matt Smith, who lost in the first round at Denver, is third with 456 points. Tonglet is fourth with 453 points, followed by Hines in fifth position with 436 points.

The Pro Stock Motorcycles will next race when the Full Throttle Drag Racing Series stops at the 24th annual Fram/Autolite NHRA Nationals, July 29-31, at Infineon Raceway in Sonoma, Calif.

10 Years After the Revolution, V-Rod® Powers Onward

July 21st, 2011 No comments

V-Rod® 10th Anniversary Edition and Updated Night Rod® Special Launched for 2012

MILWAUKEE (July 20, 2011) – Harley-Davidson celebrates a decade of pavement-pounding performance with the V-Rod® 10th Anniversary Edition motorcycle, one of three models in a 2012 V-Rod line that also includes an updated Night Rod® Special and the V-Rod Muscle®. Introduced as a 2002 model, the original V-Rod ushered in a new era of Harley-Davidson performance. Its 1130cc 60-degree Revolution® V-Twin engine was the first Harley-Davidson production engine equipped with overhead cam shafts and liquid cooling, and came with a high-winding 9000-RPM redline. Inspired by drag-racing bikes and monster-motor customs, the V-Rod debuted with aluminum disc wheels, a raked out chassis, fast-back seat and anodized aluminum bodywork, a new styling direction for Harley-Davidson.

In just 10 years, the Harley-Davidson V-Rod family grew to include a number of new models. V-Rod took to the track as the basis for the 2007 Custom Vehicle Operations V-Rod Destroyer, an eight-second factory drag racer. It was also the inspiration for the Harley-Davidson Screamin’ Eagle/Vance & Hines V-Rod, a four-time world champion in Pro Stock Motorcycle professional drag racing. For 2012, Harley-Davidson V-Rod models continue to serve up explosive performance and urban-cool styling for riders seeking a singular power-cruiser experience.

Coolbeth Sweeps Hagerstown on Factory Harley-Davidson

July 12th, 2011 No comments

Flat Track Points Race Tightens as Leader Halbert Finishes Deep in the Pack

HAGERSTOWN, Md. — (July 9, 2011) –  Harley-Davidson® Screamin’ Eagle® Factory rider Kenny Coolbeth turned in a dominating performance, leading every lap and notching his first Grand National Twins win of the season on the Hagerstown Speedway half-mile. Coolbeth also won the four-lap Dash for Cash bonus sprint at the 10th round of the AMA Pro Harley-Davidson Insurance Flat Track Championship.

“This has always been one of my favorite tracks. It feels like my home track, in fact,” said Coolbeth, who has now won three times on the Hagerstown half-mile. “We had a great setup on the factory Harley, and this track suits my riding style, so I knew we’d be hard to beat tonight.”

Johnny Lewis rode the Scott Powersports Kawasaki into the lead at the start of the 25-lap Grand National main, but Coolbeth moved to the front on turn two of the first lap and promptly opened a half-second gap on Lewis. Fast-qualifier Chris Carr slotted into third place on the American Motorcyclist Association Harley-Davidson, followed by Rogers Lake/Blue Springs Harley-Davidson rider Jared Mees and Zanotti Racing/Schaeffer’s H-D rider Jake Johnson. As the laps unwound, Coolbeth steadily pulled away from Lewis and had built a 1.3-second lead by lap 14. Carr slipped back in the pack and Mees and Johnson moved into second and third positions respectively, with Johnson more than three seconds off the lead.

Coolbeth appeared to be on his way to victory until the race was stopped on lap 17 when R&J Racing rider Doug Lawrence crashed, setting up a single-file re-start and an eight-lap dash for the finish. Coolbeth launched well on the re-start, but the action was stopped again when Carr when down after spinning his rear tire and getting bumped by another rider. On the second re-start Coolbeth held his position as Mees and Johnson both got past Lewis. The Kawasaki rider was able to fight back up to second place, but it was Coolbeth first over the finish line by 0.682 seconds. Mees was second, followed by Johnson and Goodwin Racing rider Jethro Halbert in fourth place.

The series points leader, Kings Kustoms rider Sammy Halbert, had a difficult night and finished in 14th place, a result that helped tighten the race for the series championship. After 10 of 22 rounds in the 2011 AMA Pro Harley-Davidson Insurance Flat Track Championship, Halbert has 191 points and leads Johnson by just 15 points and Mees by 16 points. Coolbeth, who scored the maximum number of points at Hagerstown, is now 26 points behind Halbert, with 165 points.

The next race on the AMA Grand National Twins schedule is July 23 on the I-96 Speedway half-mile in Lake Odessa, Mich.

Krawiec Holds on to NHRA Pro Stock Points Lead at Route 66

July 12th, 2011 No comments

Takes Harley-Davidson® V-Rod® Into Round 2 in Sunday Eliminations

JOLIET, Ill. (July 10, 2011) –  Harley-Davidson® Screamin’ Eagle®/Vance & Hines rider Ed Krawiec left the O’Reilly Auto Parts Route 66 NHRA Nationals leading the NHRA Pro Stock Motorcycle series after winning one round of eliminations. Krawiec took over the series lead after winning the last event in Norwalk, Ohio, but could not build on that momentum in the heat and humidity at Route 66 Raceway.

“We still don’t have a good hot-weather tune-up for the Screamin’ Eagle V-Rod®, and that’s something we’ve been working on for a few seasons,” said Krawiec. “So we’ll keep working on it. It wasn’t a terrible outing for us. We got one win and keep the points lead.”

Krawiec qualified fifth for the event with an elapsed time (ET) of 6.988 seconds. Harley-Davidson® Screamin’ Eagle®/Vance & Hines rider Andrew Hines qualified the team’s other Harley V-Rod in 11th position with a 7.029-second pass. Lucas Oil Buell rider Hector Arana Jr. led all qualifiers with an ET of 6.950 seconds.

Hines was done on Sunday after a first-round loss to VRoom Racing Buell rider David Hope. Hines ran 7.099 to 7.040 for Hope.

“My bike was struggling this weekend, and on Sunday we went back to the set-up we used for Eddie’s bike, but we were off on the tune-up,” said Hines. “We are going to stay here and test on Monday and try to find a better combination for this hot weather that we can use later this season, and then go right to Denver for the next event. We need to find some consistency.”

Krawiec opened the Sunday elimination rounds with a 7.014-second run and a win after the Suzuki ridden by Steve Johnson broke at the starting line. Krawiec ran 7.094 and lost to the 7.065 effort of Kuryakyn Buell rider Chip Ellis in round two.

Nitrofish Suzuki rider LE Tonglet defeated Ellis in the final round to win the event.

After six of 16 scheduled Pro Stock Motorcycle events, Krawiec leads the series with 485 points. Karen Stoffer, who won one round at Route 66, stays in second place with 479 points. Matt Smith moves up to third with 424 points after winning two rounds at Route 66. Hines and Tonglet are tied for fourth with 401 points.

The Pro Stock Motorcycles will next race at the 32nd annual Mopar Mile-High NHRA Nationals, July 22-24 at Bandimere Speedway in Morrison, Colo.
