THE 101ST AIRBORNE DIVISION ASSOCIATION IS ASKING ITS MEMBERS FOR HELP

April 24th, 2012 No comments

D-Day Vet Beaten, Wife Killed in Robbery

The 101st Airborne Division Association is asking its members and other Screaming Eagles veterans to step up and help one of their own — a 90-year-old D-Day veteran who nearly died as a result of a brutal home invasion last month.

Bob Strait of Tulsa, OK, was hospitalized after a vicious March 14 robbery that killed his wife, 85-year-old Nancy Strait. She was beaten and raped in the attack.

The couple, who met on a blind date on Thanksgiving Day 1946, had been married for 65 years.

Police have one suspect in custody, but they believe as many as four others took part in the home invasion.

To donate

Send checks to the Nancy Strait and Bob Strait Support Trust, c/o Arvest Bank, Tulsa Branch, 502 S. Main St., Tulsa, OK 74103. Please include on the check’s memo line that is for the Straits’ account.

One of the Strait’s daughters, Lenore Gay, said the investigation is ongoing, but she is unhappy that Tulsa police have mustered nowhere near the resources in her parents’ case as those applied to a nationally reported shooting spree in Tulsa that occurred at around the same time.

Gay is hugely grateful for any financial help on behalf of her family, but has also asked members of the 101st Airborne Division Association to contact Tulsa Mayor Dewey Bartlett and ask that a task force be set up immediately to find the remaining suspects still at large in her parents’ case.

Speaking of her father, Gay said he rarely talked about being in World War II, although he still has nightmares about the war to this day.

“He wouldn’t accept veterans aid for anything after the war,” Gay said, “since he felt like he was only doing his job, like everyone else.”

“He put his life on the line back then, and he deserves to be taken care of now. We’re still trying to get him to accept some kind of government assistance, but during the war, he wouldn’t even accept a Purple Heart because he felt that his injuries weren’t severe enough.”

Wayne St. Louis, 101st Airborne Association executive secretary said he hopes association members and others will step up to help the Strait family.

O’HARA WINS AMA PRO VANCE & HINES XR1200 AT ROAD ATLANTA

Kyle Wyman Charges from Back of Grid to Podium

Braselton, GA (April 23, 2012) – Bartels’ Harley-Davidson’s Tyler O’Hara converted pole position to a race win in the second round of the AMA Pro Racing Vance & Hines XR1200 series Sunday at Road Atlanta to earn his second career victory in the class and the championship points lead.

O’Hara survived an opening lap red flag incident that forced fellow front row starter Kyle Wyman (KLR Group/Vesrah) to restart from the back of the grid on a backup motorcycle, and challenges from his Bartels’ Harley-Davidson teammate Michael Barnes and 2011 XR1200 championship runner-up Steve Rapp (Harv’s Harley-Davidson), each of whom led laps early in the race, to earn the hard-fought win.

“What a race today. Rapp passed me in a place I didn’t think I could be passed coming out of [turn] one. I just followed him and learned a couple of things that helped me out for when I got back in the lead, and Barney was there the whole time keeping us honest,” said O’Hara, who led eight of the race’s 10 laps and held off Barnes for a 0.626-second margin of victory.

Wyman, who posted the fastest lap of the race with a 1:39.722, rebounded to an unexpected third place finish after Rapp pulled off with a mechanical problem with two laps to go. Wyman’s race was spoiled by a crash on the opening lap of the original race start caused by oil from another machine that cracked its primary case during the warm-up lap. Unable to repair his primary motorcycle during the red flag period, he was forced to restart the race from the back of the grid.

“Apparently someone dumped something on the sight lap because it wasn’t there before,” Wyman said. “They sent us out to race any way and I got the worst of it. I went down hard and it hurt but all I could think about was getting back to pit row and figuring out how to continue racing.”

Further back in the order, Harv’s Harley-Davidson’s Travis Wyman emerged ahead of Longevity Racing’s Barrett Long and Shane Narbonne (Suburban Motors H-D) to claim a strong fourth place finish from his seventh place starting slot. Ben Carlson (Suburban Motors H-D), Michael Corbino, Gerry Signorelli, and David Estok rounded out the top ten finishers.

PROTOCOL FOR DETERMINING ELECTRIC MOTORCYCLE TOP SPEED

April 24th, 2012 No comments

Motorcycle Shoppers Can Compare Accurate Speed Data

IRVINE, CA – Consumers wanting to compare top speed capabilities among various electric motorcycles will soon find help from a new test procedure developed by the Motorcycle Industry Council. The Top Speed Test Procedure for Electric Motorcycles, just created by the MIC’s Electric Vehicle Subcommittee, establishes standards for determining an electric motorcycle’s maximum velocity.

“Manufacturers have used a variety of means for calculating top speed, presenting a challenge for shoppers interested in what an electric bike can really do,” said Tim Buche, president and CEO of the MIC.  “Some methods used right now may not give an accurate measurement, even under similar test conditions. The more that electric motorcycle makers adopt this protocol, the more it can help buyers who are taking a good look at this emerging segment.”

The MIC anticipates that manufacturers will immediately and voluntarily begin using the new protocol. The MIC subcommittee also expects to have this new test procedure adopted by the Society of Automotive Engineers (SAE).

The MIC’s Top Speed Test Procedure is based on the European Union test procedure, and sets standards for the many variables involved in determining top speed, such as vehicle equipment, battery charge-discharge cycle, test roadway conditions, rider weight, attire and riding position, and atmospheric conditions such as wind speed, temperature and atmospheric pressure.

The MIC’s Electric Vehicle Subcommittee includes more than 15 representatives of on-highway electric motorcycle makers who are currently in various stages of developing electric motorcycles, as well as other industry participants.

“As more and more electric motorcycles appear on the market, having standards we can all agree on is vital to manufacturers and to our customers,” said Abe Askenazi, chair of the Electric Vehicle Subcommittee and chief technology officer at Zero Motorcycles. “The new top speed test procedure is just one of the many standards the subcommittee has already published or is working on.”

Besides the test procedure, the subcommittee is addressing a broad scope of issues related to electric vehicles, including public information and education. On Capitol Hill and in state capitals, the MIC’s government relations staff monitors and advocates lawmaking that promotes electric vehicle use and ensures that two- and three-wheeled vehicles are included in such legislation.

The entire text of the MIC’s new Top Speed Test Procedure for Electric Motorcycles is available here.

The Motorcycle Industry Council exists to preserve, protect and promote motorcycling through government relations, communications and media relations, statistics and research, aftermarket programs, development of data communications standards, and activities surrounding technical and regulatory issues. As a not-for-profit, national industry association, the MIC seeks to support motorcyclists by representing manufacturers and distributors of motorcycles, scooters, motorcycle/ATV/ROV parts and accessories, and members of allied trades such as insurance, finance and investment companies, media companies and consultants.

The MIC is headquartered in Irvine, Calif., with a government relations office in metropolitan Washington, D.C. First called the MIC in 1970, the organization has been in operation since 1914. Visit the MIC at www.mic.org.

AMERICAN MOTORCYCLIST ASSOCIATION (AMA) GRAND TOURS

AMA Flash Tours Promote Fun Themes, Prizes for Road Riders

PICKERINGTON, Ohio — American Motorcyclist Association (AMA) Grand Tours have long offered motorcyclists a way to participate in great rides and win cool prizes on their own schedules. New for 2012, the AMA is introducing AMA Flash Tours, which put the grand tour concept on hyperdrive, including similarly fun themes but on a much more immediate schedule.

At the start of each AMA Flash Tour, the AMA will announce a theme or challenge designed to get riders on the road to visit interesting destinations. Participants then tackle the challenge and document their effort with a photo emailed to flashtours@americanmotorcyclist.com. (All photos may be shared on the AMA’s Facebook page at Facebook.com/AmericanMotorcyclist, at AmericanMotorcyclist.com or in American Motorcyclist magazine.)

AMA Flash Tours run for approximately two weeks, and a lucky participant from each tour will be selected to win a prize pack from AMA partner organizations or the AMA Motorcycle Hall of Fame. For example, prizes might include Hall of Fame themed t-shirts, posters or other items.

The inaugural AMA Flash Tour was won by Jim and Shelly Holtman from Quincy, Ill., with a photo of their Harley-Davidson in front of the Classic Diner in Jacksonville, Ill. The tour ran from April 6 through April 19 with a “photo tag” theme. Riders were challenged to replicate the spirit of a scene in a photo provided by the AMA, which was a motorcycle in front of a diner.

“We like to tour, but we don’t really have time to do a whole AMA Grand Tour,” Jim Holtman said. “Most all our free time is spent with helmets on, riding the bike and Shelly loves to take pictures, so this was a natural for us. We had a lot of fun on the road chasing pictures.”

The second AMA Flash Tour is the “Go AMA! Flash Tour.” To participate, simply take a photograph of your bike at three places where “AMA” appears in the name (for example, “AlabAMA,” “Rick’s SkatorAMA,” etc.). A sign with the name of the location must be included in the photograph, as well as the latest copy of your favorite riding publication. Then, email the photo to flashtours@americanmotorcyclist.com, and include your full name and address.

For more information and to see current rider submissions for AMA Flash Tours, see AmericanMotorcyclist.com > Events > AMA Flash Tours or Facebook.com/AmericanMotorcyclist.

Million Mile Monday Expanding to Two Days

Milwaukee  – The Harley Owners Group (H.O.G.), the official riding club of the Harley-Davidson Motor Company, is pleased to invite all Harley-Davidson motorcycle riders around the world to join its members in celebrating the freedom of the open road during the 2012 Harley-Davidson World Ride.

Launched in 2008, Million Mile Monday has been an annual event on the last Monday of June that brings thousands of Harley-Davidson motorcycle riders together in a collective effort to celebrate the motorcycle riding experience. In 2011, riders collectively logged more that 4,000,000 miles. New for 2012, Million Mile Monday has been expanded into a two-day World Ride on Sunday June 24 and Monday June 25 to give more riders worldwide an opportunity to participate, and with the expansion to two days this year, the company hopes to raise the mileage total even higher.

“H.O.G. is excited to welcome Harley riders around the world to take part in the first-ever Harley-Davidson World Ride,” said Nigel Villiers, Harley-Davidson Director of H.O.G. and Customer Experience International. “On these two days, riders of all nations will band together as one, dedicating ourselves to a shared love of riding motorcycles, and no one will ride alone.”

Whether it’s a ride across town or cross-country, or simply around the block to work, every mile or kilometer counts and can be recorded by logging into Harley-Davidson’s online mileage accumulator at h-d.com/worldride, where a rolling odometer will record the collective distance traveled by all participants in the World Ride. At the completion of the ride, a commemorative certificate of participation can be printed to display each rider’s mileage total for the day.

NEW DUCATI DIAVEL DUAL SADDLE FROM CORBIN

April 20th, 2012 No comments

Corbin Introduces a Dual Saddle for the New Ducati Diavel

Hollister, CA- Corbin announced today the addition of their new Dual Sport Saddle designed specifically for the new Ducati Diavel. Designed to fit perfectly to the bike for a custom look and vastly improve the ergonomics of the Diavel, Corbin neutralized the seating posture and did away with the hammock shape to give you excellent support without the pinching feel of the stock seat.

Corbin designed the seating position on the Diavel seat to move the rider back approximately 1.5 inches from the stock seating position. This gives you a bit more seating room and still integrates perfectly with the seat cowling. Seat height is between the stock Ducati seat and their “Tall” seat version which gives us the ability to neutralize the seating platform. In the nose area, we sculpt the saddle to allow for good ground reach.

Naturally, we set out to design a seat to fit the bike visually as well as improving the quality of your ride. Our high density Comfort Cell foam allows a sleek, low profile while providing a firm supportive ride that lasts. Rider seating is ergonomically shaped to fit the curve of your body and provide better weight distribution and eliminate the “hammock” shape of the stock seat that pinches in all the wrong places. This also helps to eliminate the centralized pressure felt from the stock seat.

Passenger seating area is designed with a neutralized platform to curb sliding forward in the saddle. This gives your passenger good mid-range comfort. Sorry, but the removable passenger backrest isn’t available in this seat model … there’s just nowhere to put the hardware for it safely. On the other hand, we did integrate hardware to use your Ducati seat cowling. Just bolt it onto the Corbin seat as you would with the stock seat for a fast, solo look.

Notice how close the Corbin saddle fits to the tank and chassis… this kind of fit comes only from a Corbin saddle and our unique Fibertech basepan. Our rigid base material not only fits perfect to the bike, but provides a firm foundation to support the carefully designed foam shape. Corbin’s ergonomic shaping creates a visually pleasing look on the motorcycle and adds to the custom appeal.

We use genuine leather seating in all of our saddle models because it breathes with your body and will conform along with the foam shape during break in. This provides an added bit of luxury on those long rides. In the side panels, we use a coordinating vinyl material that will support the foam shape and keep the saddle looking sharp longer. Be sure to care for you leather saddle properly with a quality conditioner like our Saddle Cream. This will help the leather to remain supple and weather resistant while it matures gracefully. Mounts to the motorcycle like the stock seat. … Functions on key lock system with brackets preinstalled on saddle.

Corbin, the world’s finest motorcycle saddle. … Hand crafted in the USA and setting the standard for over four decades! From the original Corbin removable backrest to their unique saddle designs, stylish saddle bags and touring quality fairings; they are unequalled in quality, design and function. Corbin designs and processes are so unique; many of them have been awarded US Patents. Visit “The Wizard’s Workshop” in Hollister, CA where you can ride in and get a custom saddle made while you wait or their new showroom in Ormond Beach, FL where they’re open seven days a week.

For those interested in obtaining more information on Corbin, you can reach them at 800-538-7035 or online at www.corbin.com. Visit Corbin Headquarters at 2360 Technology Parkway, Hollister, CA. 95023 or Corbin Florida at 1433 US Highway 1, Ormond Beach, FL 32174.
