PICKERINGTON, Ohio — The American Motorcyclist Association (AMA) welcomes West Coast off-road racers who enjoy all forms of enduro competition — including the tradition and challenge of time-keeping enduros — to participate in a new AMA Featured Series for 2012.
“Enduro racing is part of the heritage of motorcycling competition in this country,” said AMA Director of Racing Joe Bromley. “We welcome the efforts of these longtime AMA partners to elevate enduro competition on the West Coast. I’m sure these events will not only satisfy current riders eager for more enduro competition, they will also introduce many more riders to this exciting sport.”
The AMA Western Checkpoint Enduro Championship is organized by the Western Enduro Promotions Group (WEPG) in partnership with AMA District 36 (Northern California), AMA District 37 (Southern California), and the AMA-chartered Arizona Offroad Motorcycle Racing Association. It features all styles of enduro competition, including time-keeping, start control and qualifier format. It includes events in California, Arizona and Nevada.
“I’m really happy with how the Western Checkpoint Enduro Championship has come together over the last two years,” said WEPG Chairman Erek Kudla. “For 2012 the WEPG has hooked up with Northern California’s District 36 and Arizona’s AMRA to host an eight-round enduro series composed of all forms of enduros, but the control of the individual events stays with the local clubs who have been successfully hosting enduros for as long as 60 years!”
The 2012 series opener, the Not-So Tuff-Enuff Enduro, brought 345 riders to Johnson Valley, Calif., on Jan. 15. James Ptarcinski of Sunnyville, Calif., took the overall as well as the Vet 30+ class win at the first round. The event also featured a Saturday family enduro, hosted by the Training Wheels MC. The family enduro provided a more laid-back alternative to Sunday’s full-on race as well as an opportunity to introduce some new riders to the sport.
AMA Featured Series are premier AMA-sanctioned series operated by a single club or promoter, a recognized AMA District or a closely affiliated group of AMA-chartered event organizers. AMA Featured Series do not award national championship points or awards, but do provide regional exposure and recognition.

PICKERINGTON, Ohio — This year’s 24th annual AMA Motorcycle Hall of Fame Breakfast at Daytona, which features Hall of Famer and 1993 500cc World Grand Prix roadracing Champion Kevin Schwantz, will once again include the popular silent auction to benefit the Hall of Fame.
Special items available for the auction are still rolling in, and among them is an authentic Nichole Cheza flat-track racing helmet (complete with racetrack roost spots), a Bill Werner “Pair of Nines” race shirt honoring racers Gary Nixon and Jay Springsteen, special signed posters from past Hall of Fame events, an autographed copy of Buzz Kanter’s Indian Motocycles book and much more.
The silent auction is open to attendees at this year’s breakfast, which is set for Friday of Bike Week, March 16, in the Daytona International Speedway infield at the prestigious 500 Club building. Tickets are available online at www.motorcyclemuseum.org, or by calling (800) 262-5646.
“One of the great things about the AMA Motorcycle Hall of Fame is the direct connection it provides to Hall of Famers and others in the motorcycle world, and nowhere is that more true than in the silent auction, where bidders are vying for memorabilia from the fast and famous,” says Jack Penton, the AMA’s director of operations. “And best of all, 100 percent of the auction proceeds go to support the Hall.”
Featured speaker Schwantz, who was inducted into the Hall of Fame in 1999, rocketed to prominence as one of America’s best roadracers during the mid-1980s. By the end of the decade, Schwantz had moved to international competition in the 500cc Grand Prix World Championships. He was a perennial top rider in that series and won the world championship in 1993. During his Grand Prix racing career, Schwantz racked up 25 500cc GP victories, putting him second all-time among American riders.
At the breakfast, Schwantz will be interviewed onstage by race announcer and Bike Week mainstay Ben Cheatwood before fielding questions from the audience in a rare up-close-and-personal appearance.
Several individuals have signed on as sponsors of the event, including AMA Board Chairman Stan Simpson and long-time Hall of Fame supporters Mike and Margaret Wilson. Additional sponsorships — individual and corporate — are available by contacting Steve Gotoski at sgotoski@ama-cycle.org.

STURGIS (February 24, 2012) The Buffalo Chip Challenge student bike build plans to take bagger bravado to a whole new level for the 2012 Sturgis Rally. At Brown High School in Sturgis, students are beginning the initial stages of the build with lead instructor Keith Terry that will convert a stock Harley-Davison® Road King donated by Black Hills-Harley Davidson into a one of a kind custom touring classic. The initial phase of the bike build will give students insights on how concept design, parts layout and planning play into building one of the top custom bikes in the nation.
Motorcycle industry veteran Keith Terry of Terry Components serving as the lead instructor for the build wants to give the students an edge by customizing and a stock motorcycle in line with current industry trends as well as the tastes and preferences of the buying public. Terry conceptualized a design for the students that looked and rode great, complete with frame-mounted fairing, large-scale front wheel, high output sound system and a host of quality parts and unique accessories.
“We not only want to give the students of Brown High School in Sturgis real world experience, we want to make sure they are working with the top custom parts and accessories the motorcycle industry has to offer” said Rod Woodruff, president of the Sturgis Buffalo Chip. “The response we have received from aftermarket companies as been overwhelming and many of the parts that will be used for the build are so innovative and new, most have not yet been offered to the general public.”
A significant effort in the initial phase of the build will be to provide new geometry to the front end of the motorcycle in order to accommodate a new 23” custom wheel from RC Components. Nick Cramer from Dakota V-Twin will be assisting Keith Terry and the students by removing the neck of the stock frame in order to modify the rake and trail of the front end as a new neck and triple trees from Hawg Haulters, Inc. will then be installed by the students. A new rear fender from Klock Werks Kustom Cycles and custom extended saddle bags from Sinister Industries will provide the bagger lean, low swagger to round out the bikes profile from front to back.
“This program does so much to enhance student’s skill sets, confidence and abilities,” says Keith Terry of Terry Components. “Probably the greatest insight students are gaining with the program is how to relate things they are learning in other classes to this real world application. Removing the front end of the bike and modifying its rake and trail, has as much to do with students geometry class as it has to do with building a bike.”
The Sturgis Buffalo Chip® is proud to champion the Buffalo Chip Challenge™ and provide local students in Sturgis with the skills they need to become great technicians in the South Dakota workforce. The finished Buffalo Chip Challenge motorcycle will be featured in the August 2012 issue of American Iron Magazine and will be auctioned off during the 2012 Sturgis Rally in support of the 5th annual Legends Ride, which has given more than $200,000 to local Black Hills charities thus far.
The public is invited to follow the Buffalo Chip Challenge build at http://www.facebook.com/SturgisLegendsRide, where pictures and video of the Buffalo Chip Challenge will be published, or to get more information and make reservations for the Legends Ride by visiting www.buffalochip.com or calling (605) 347 9000.

”It’s not about the war, it’s about the warriors.”
Michael was a graduate of Plant High prior to becoming a Marine. During his tour in Afghanistan he was performing a ‘dismounted’ patrol when he was hit with an Improvised Explosive Device (IED) which claimed both of his legs and half of his left arm.
Sunday under gray skies with misting rain and windy conditions four of us rode up to Tampa International Airport to welcome this wounded warrior home from Bethesda Naval Hospital where he has been undergoing therapy since returning stateside. Mike thus far has endured 23 surgeries during his recovery process.
Upon our arrival at the ‘cell phone’ parking lot we gathered together with over 250 more motorcyclists who were there for the same reason, to make sure Mike Nicholson was properly thanked for his personal sacrifice and to make sure he realized he will not be forgotten.
As the morning wore on and the latest updates on the escort came in we were immediately informed and each area was addressed by Patriot Guard Riders – Ride Captains Randall ‘Tour Guide’ McNabb and Thomas ‘T-Man’ Brown.
When we lined up for the escort we had sixty (60) Flag Bikes (w/ 3’x5’ American Flags) and 200 plus other bikes. Those bikes which were not in the immediate escort were staged along the route which we took to Christ the King Catholic Church in South Tampa.
Once we got under the terminal drive through area we almost brought Tampa International to a standstill. Beside the 60 bike escort, we had Tampa Police Department, Hillsborough County and Florida Highway Patrol Troopers with us lined up and ready to roll.
We heard a faint “Here he comes” and it got louder and the applause started and it became louder the closer Mike got to the driveway.
Once inside his limo we left the airport property and business went back to normal. People understood, a Wounded Warrior had returned home.
As we traveled we passed thousands of people standing alongside the roadway holding flags or banners, waving, saluting and cheering as we passed.
Once at the church the ever so humble Marine thanked everyone for sticking by him and praying for him. He also had one request “Y’all have done so much I just ask you to do one more thing for me, to keep praying for the guys over in Afghanistan right now.” Shouts of God bless you and Marines shouting “Oo-rah” could be heard throughout the large crowd.
In October Mike walked for the first time on prosthetic legs. In November he danced at the Marine Corps Ball and in January he cycled from Miami to Key West with the Wounded Warriors Project.
An amazing young man and a proud Marine left the building and traveled a few blocks from the church to a quiet South Tampa flag lined street where he finally found himself home again at least for a month from therapy.
I would like to thank Tampa PD, Hillsborough County Sheriff’s Office and the Highway Patrol for making it possible for Michael, his family and friends.
Terry Longpre
Semper Fi Marine – Welcome Home and God Bless you.
