O’Hara and Fillmore Split AMA Pro Vance & Hines XR1200 Races at Indianapolis

August 31st, 2011 No comments

Runner-Up Rapp Closes Championship Gap

Milwaukee (August 29, 2011) – Tyler O’Hara and Chris Fillmore shared wins in a pair of historic AMA Pro Vance & Hines XR1200 races presented by Harley-Davidson Insurance at Indianapolis Motor Speedway August 27 and 28, as the thundering sound of Harley-Davidson racing motorcycles returned to the famous Brickyard for the first time since the track’s first year of racing in 1909.

In Saturday’s first round of the double-header, held in conjunction with the Red Bull Indianapolis GP round of the FIM MotoGP World Championship, privateer racer O’Hara, running without external sponsorship, broke through for the first AMA Pro road racing win of his career in a dramatic victory over Parts Unlimited’s Steve Rapp and Latus Motors’ Jason DiSalvo in the first of two 10-lap contests at the Speedway.

Following a first lap crash that knocked several bikes out of the race, O’Hara, Rapp, DiSalvo, Fillmore (RMR/Bruce Rossmeyer’s Daytona Racing) and Jeremy McWilliams (Harley-Davidson of Bloomington-Indiana) broke away in a five rider pack that diced for the lead until the final lap, when McWilliams, the 2010 UK XR1200 champion, tangled with Fillmore in a clash that left the championship leader on the ground and out of the race and points. O’Hara held on for a 0.048-second win over Rapp.

“It just feels really good right now,” said an emotional O’Hara in the victory circle. “This is my first AMA Pro win, and I feel phenomenal right now; it’s been a long time coming. I’ve been racing pretty much my whole life, about eighteen years, and I’ve had a lot of upsets, led a lot of big races, and never really caught a break, and it seems like this weekend I was in the right place at the right time and caught a break there at the end.”

In Sunday’s second round of the double-header, Fillmore rebounded from Saturday’s disappointment to take his fourth XR1200 series win of the season, leading Rapp across the Speedway’s yard of bricks start/finish line by 0.169 second, with O’Hara in third 1.083 seconds behind.

“My plan going into [Race 1] was to kind of play it a little bit conservative,” said Fillmore. “After the crash I had on Friday, I wasn’t sure how I was going to be on the bike. That didn’t go as planned, so [for Race 2] I came in with a game plan of trying to throw down and pull away. It didn’t happen, and those guys were right there the whole time, so we just had to race it out. It was a little stressful for me, but I wasn’t going to let them by and I was going to do everything I could to keep it out front.”

With his pair of runner-up finishes, Rapp closed Fillmore’s championship lead to 12 points going into Labor Day Weekend’s season finale. O’Hara stands third ahead of Drag Specialties’ Michael Barnes, who finished fourth in both races.

The AMA Pro Racing Vance & Hines XR1200 Series concludes the 2011 season September 3-4 at New Jersey Motorsports Park in Millville, NJ.

America’s Ryan Dungey, Ryan Villopoto and Blake Baggett set to race the world at 2011 FIM Motocross of Nations

August 31st, 2011 No comments

PICKERINGTON, Ohio — The United States is gearing up for a full-blown assault on the 2011 FIM Motocross of Nations, Sept. 17-18, at Saint D’Angely, France, with the American Motorcyclist Association (AMA) finalizing the team structure and partners coming on board to support a first-class world championship effort.

The team, announced on Aug. 13, includes Rockstar Makita Suzuki’s Ryan Dungey, Monster Energy Kawasaki’s Ryan Villopoto and Monster Energy Pro Circuit Kawasaki’s Blake Baggett. Dungey will race the MX1 class, which features 450cc four-stroke machinery. Villopoto will race the open class. Baggett will compete in the MX2 class, which features 250cc four-stroke motorcycles.

Roger DeCoster, Red Bull KTM Factory Racing team manager and Motorcycle Hall of Famer, will manage the team in its hunt for a record 22nd Motocross of Nations Championship.

“This is an awesome team,” DeCoster said. “The two Ryans are quite dominant. What else can you say about them?

“As for Baggett, he is putting in a lot of strong rides in the 250cc class, and he’s getting stronger as the season comes to an end,” said DeCoster. “What’s really important is that he is a guy who can come from behind. It’s tough to get a good start in the Motocross of Nations on a 250cc bike, because they race on the track with the 450cc bikes, and you have to be able to come through the pack a lot. We need a rider who can do that, and Blake can.”

AMA Director of Supercross and AMA Pro Racing Relations Kevin Crowther said that it’s nice to return to the Motocross of Nations with another superb team.

“We couldn’t be happier with the U.S. national team this year,” Crowther said. “Villopoto is leading an extremely tight 450cc points race in the Lucas Oil AMA Pro Motocross Championship. Dungey is the returning overall champion from the 2010 Motocross of Nations, where he led the U.S. National team to its record 21st victory. And Baggett is lighting up the 250cc outdoors class, where he is the top-ranked U.S. rider. We are bringing a lot of talent to France this September, and not just on the track, but off it as well.”

Crowther said that the off-track talent includes several companies that have stepped up to support the U.S. Motocross of Nations program this year.

“As in previous years, Feld Motor Sports, which promotes the Monster Energy AMA Supercross and FIM World Championship, Fox Racing and the Asterisk Mobile Medical Center continue to support the Motocross of Nations effort in a big way,” Crowther said. “In addition, we owe a big measure of gratitude to MX Sports Pro Racing, which promotes the Lucas Oil AMA Pro Motocross Championship, for their help and support as well. Of course, we also have to recognize the contributions of the riders’ teams — Monster Energy Kawasaki, Monster Energy Pro Circuit Kawasaki and Rockstar Makita Suzuki.”

Dungey has competed most recently at the Motocross of Nations, racing for the winning U.S. team in Italy in 2009 and Lakewood, Colo., in 2010. He said that teamwork will be key to success in France.

“This is a really good team with Ryan Villopoto and Blake Baggett,” Dungey said. “To go with that, we have a great group of people behind us. We all know how to work together, and we’re building a great partnership — that’s what it takes to do well at this event.

“It’s not about winning individual honor here,” he added. “It’s about winning as a team, and we’re all going to help each other out, whether it’s advice we can give or whatever. One man can’t win it. All three of us have to do our job. With this being Blake’s first time, if I can help him in any way, I will, and I know Villopoto will as well.”

Villopoto, who last competed on the U.S. team in 2008 when he won with James Stewart and Tim Ferry, said that he’s thrilled to be back and part of a particularly talented U.S. national team. Villopoto also was a member of the 2006 and 2007 winning teams.

“I’m really happy to be back on the team after being injured the past two years,” Villopoto said. “It was hard to watch and not be able to have the chance to race the event. As long as we all go out there and ride how we’ve been riding this season, I think we have a great shot at winning.”

Baggett says that he’s looking forward to the new experience of competing at the Motocross of Nations.

“For sure, I think this will be a cool experience against a bunch of guys I’ve never raced against before,” Baggett said. “The GPs are a little unfamiliar to me, and well as who is fast over there, so it will be exciting as a new experience. Also, racing the 250s on the track with the 450s should be fun. Hopefully we can impress quite a few people and bring the trophy home to the USA.”

As for the track, which also hosted the Motocross of Nations in 2000 when the United States won with Ricky Carmichael, Ryan Hughes and Travis Pastrana, DeCoster described it as a “typical” Grand Prix track.

“There are some elevation changes,” he said. “It’s pretty wide. It’s a bit on the side of a hill. The club there does a good job. It’s a well-organized track. The club puts a lot into it, so it should be a great time.”

The Motocross of Nations is one of the most high-profile motorsport events in the world. It features national teams competing for a combined score to determine the overall championship-winning country. The event emerged in post-war Europe in 1947 and has run uninterrupted since that time.

The United States is the all-time leader in Motocross of Nations overall victories with 21. Great Britain is second with 16.

ABATE Chapters Help Build House for Wounded U.S. Veteran

August 26th, 2011 No comments

St. Augustine, FL, August 25, 2011 – ABATE of Florida, Inc. Vintage Chapter members showed up in force last weekend to help build a new house for one of America’s heroes. The home is being donated to Cpl. Tyler Southern and his wife by local businessmen in conjunction with Homes For OurTroops organization.

In 2010, Cpl. Southern, U.S. Marine Corps, lost both of his legs above the knees and his right arm above the elbow after stepping on a road side bomb while serving in Afghanistan.

Members of Vintage Chapter ABATE showed up and worked diligently alongside other local volunteers under the blazing sun to complete the shell of the new house in just three days. Chapter President John Massoth said the experience was very humbling. The designs for the new house were done by ABATE of Florida, Inc. Duval Chapter member Linda Purvis of Northeast Florida Design, Inc.

This is another example of ABATE chapters pulling together for a common goal and to honor and help one of our military veterans that have sacrificed a part of themselves so that we may enjoy our freedoms. KUDOS to all involved.

Motorcycle Safety Foundation Launches First-Ever Motorcycling Naturalistic Study

August 26th, 2011 No comments

IRVINE, CA, Aug. 25, 2011 – The first rider participating in the first-ever MSF 100 Motorcyclists Naturalistic Study rode off with a fully instrumented, data-logging bike from the Virginia Tech Transportation Institute (VTTI) last week, marking the start of the year-long research project.  Each of the 100 bikes, routinely being ridden in real-world traffic, and equipped with an array of data acquisition systems, will provide comprehensive, real-time, near-crash, pre-crash and actual-crash information that is unprecedented in motorcycle research.

“Our priority with this research is to observe the participants on a day-to-day basis,” said Dr. Sherry Williams, MSF director of quality assurance and research. “We’re installing unobtrusive cameras and recording devices on the bikes so the participants soon forget they’re being recorded. We can learn a tremendous amount by just observing their normal, routine riding behavior.”

Sponsored by the MSF and administered by VTTI, the MSF 100 Motorcyclists Naturalistic Study is the first of its kind. Similar to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) and VTTI’s 100 Car Naturalistic Study, this groundbreaking research will track 100 participant-owned motorcycles for one year and approximately 500,000 total miles.

Each motorcycle will be equipped with extensive data acquisition systems, which include five color cameras, a GPS, accelerometers, gyro, forward radar, machine vision lane tracker, brake lever and pedal input, and more.

“This research offers much more valuable data than going to a crash site where the bike may have been removed,” Williams said. “With this research, it’s all recorded and sequenced, so the video will coincide with the brake pressure and accelerator readings, etc. We will get a very rich picture, where you can see the input from the rider and how the bike is reacting.”

Three different locations will be used for outfitting, tracking and data collection from the 100 motorcycles over the coming year. In addition to VTTI in Blacksburg, Va., the other data collection facilities are the MSF headquarters in Irvine, Calif., and the Motorcycle Mechanics Institute (MMI) in Orlando, Fla. These locations are ideal because they offer a variety of riding conditions and traffic densities.

“We are very excited about this pioneering research,” said MSF President Tim Buche. “In the United States each year, the vast majority of riders travel more than 25 billion miles collectively and they ride safely and without incident. But riders have not been scientifically observed in a natural setting. And this naturalistic study will allow us to learn from these riders and then incorporate those findings into our rider education and training programs and other safety countermeasures.”

VTTI collaborated with NHTSA on the preliminary feasibility study that laid the groundwork for the MSF 100 Motorcyclist Naturalistic Study. VTTI is recruiting 100 anonymous participants based primarily on their age and model of motorcycle owned.

The study will track two age groups each – one in the 21-to-34 age group and one in the 45-to-64 age group – on seven motorcycle models from five brands.  Motorcycle types include sport bikes, cruisers and touring bikes.

The Motorcycle Safety Foundation® promotes safety through rider training and education, operator licensing tests and public information programs. The MSF works with the federal government, state agencies, the military and others to offer training for all skill levels so riders can enjoy a lifetime of safe, responsible motorcycling. Standards established by the MSF® have been recognized worldwide since 1973.

The MSF is a not-for-profit organization sponsored by BMW, BRP, Ducati, Harley-Davidson, Honda, Kawasaki, KTM, Piaggio, Suzuki, Triumph, Victory and Yamaha. For safety information or to enroll in the RiderCourseSM nearest you, visit www.msf-usa.org or call (800) 446-9227.

Krawiec Races Harley V-Rod to Points Lead at Brainerd

Hines and Krawiec Reach Semi-Finals; Krawiec Tops Qualifying

BRAINERD, Minn. (August 21, 2011) – Harley-Davidson® Screamin’ Eagle®/Vance & Hines rider Ed Krawiec advanced to the semi-final round of eliminations and took the lead in the NHRA Pro Stock Motorcycle season points at the Lucas Oil Nationals at Brainerd International Raceway. With just one event left before the Countdown to the Championship playoffs begin, Krawiec holds a 51-point lead over Karen Stoffer, who lost in the first round of eliminations at Brainerd.

“Today we put ourselves in a strong position,” said Krawiec. “A win would have clinched the top seed, but I feel confident we can hold the top spot into the Countdown.”

Pro Stock riders in the top-ten in points following the U.S. Nationals at Indianapolis over Labor Day weekend will qualify for the six-event Countdown, with the standings resetting in 10-point increments. The rider leading in points gets a 20-point bonus, and will open the Countdown with a 30-point lead over the second-place rider.

Krawiec was riding a strong Harley-Davidson V-Rod® motorcycle all weekend. His 6.885-second run on Friday set a new Pro Stock Motorcycle track record and stood as the quickest round of qualifying. On Saturday, Krawiec set a new top-speed track record at 195.17 mph. Harley-Davidson® Screamin’ Eagle®/Vance & Hines rider Andrew Hines qualified third on the team’s other Harley V-Rod at 6.916 seconds.

Both Krawiec and Hines advanced through the first two rounds of eliminations on Sunday. Krawiec defeated The Edge Suzuki rider Michael Phillips and SAF/Motorcycle Specialties rider Jerry Savoie. Hines got a win in round one when Stoffer, who came to Brainerd as the series points leader, fouled at the start on the Geico Suzuki. Hines defeated Lucas Oil Buell rider Hector Arana in round two, but lost to Hector Arana Jr. on the other Lucas Oil Buell in the semi-finals. Krawiec faced defending series champion LE Tonglet on the Nitrofish Suzuki in the semi-finals, and lost at the starting line when his 6.904-second ET was not enough to overcome a 0.084-second reaction time and catch Tonglet, who had a 0.013/6.956 pass.

Tonglet defeated Arana Jr. in the final to take his fourth event win of the season. Arana Jr. also bettered Krawiec’s track record with a 6.881 ET in the second round of eliminations.

Krawiec, who had inconsistent reaction times of 0.109, 0.029 and 0.084 seconds on Sunday, is adjusting to a new clutch setting on his Harley V-Rod.

“I was struggling with the tree all weekend,” said Krawiec. “The way we’ve got the clutch set up now we are getting a good time in the first 60 feet of the run, but it’s tricky to handle for the rider. The bike is slower to leave the line, so I need to recalibrate my reaction. I think I’ll be ready for the next race.”

Both Hines and Krawiec have locked up positions in the Countdown.

“Looks like I’m solid for the fourth spot no matter what, and Ed is in a great position, which means we can go to Indy for the U.S. Nationals and just cut loose and race for fun,” said Hines.

After nine of 16 scheduled Pro Stock Motorcycle events, Krawiec leads the class in points with 735. Stoffer is second with 684 and is now just one point ahead of LE Tonglet, who is in third place with 683 points. Hines is fourth with 573 points.

The Pro Stock Motorcycles will next race at the 57th annual Mac Tools U.S. Nationals, Aug. 31-Sept. 5, at Lucas Oil Raceway at Indianapolis.
