Through the Collector’s Eyes on exhibit until  July 10, 2011

Five collectors who call Florida home share art from their  collections in “Through the Collector’s Eyes”, currently on exhibit through July 10, 2011. The selected art from the collections of Charlotte Everbach, Ed and Jean Harris, Margery Pabst, Linda  Pinto, and Judy Thompson gives insight, not so much into the qualities of what defines “fine art”, but more into what type of art stirs their soul, brings them joy, and subsequently became a part of their daily living environments.

This show is packed with variety and includes paintings, mixed media, graphite drawing, photography, encaustic and sculpture out of wood, clay, glass and other objects. In addition to the pieces from the collections the artists have been invited to exhibit new works for the public’s enjoyment and consideration.

AMA Racing Adds Classes, Enhances Motocross Track for AMA Racing Vintage Grand Championships

PICKERINGTON, Ohio — AMA Racing, the amateur racing department of the American Motorcyclist Association (AMA), is bringing a number of enhancements to the motocross track for the AMA Racing Vintage Grand Championships during AMA Vintage Motorcycle Days featuring Kawasaki, Marque of the Year, this July 22-24 at the Mid-Ohio Sports Car Course in Lexington, Ohio.

“The AMA Racing Vintage Grand Championships attracts bikes from the 1950s to the beginning of the modern era, and everything in between,” said AMA Director of Racing Joe Bromley. “Our track needs to challenge the new bikes while staying historically authentic. Improvements planned for 2011 will strike the right balance so that everyone will have a demanding track to race on.”

Bromley added that one factor driving the changes to the motocross track is the addition of non-current classes to the program. The 122cc-Open class will allow bikes sold as pre-1997 models. It will have A and B/C divisions.

“Time marches on, and the non-current classes are our way of opening the doors of the AMA Vintage Grand Championships to bikes that may not be competitive with current technology but are advanced beyond the traditional vintage category,” Bromley said. “We don’t want any bike left sitting in a garage or shed unused somewhere just because there’s nowhere to race it. We encourage riders to come out and support these non-current classes and battle for the podium.”

AMA Racing is working with Bart Newman and Jeff Beerbower, the owners of Log Road MX Park in Coldwater, Mich., to design, build and maintain the track during the event. Bromley said that Newman and Beerbower are experienced track builders and understand both the science and art of creating a thrilling motocross course for bikes of all eras.

“Although the design isn’t finalized, man-made obstacles will include off-cambers, berms, jumps, rollers and other enhancements that will leverage the natural terrain of the motocross area at the Mid-Ohio Sports Car Course,” Bromley said. “We’ll also have a modified starting procedure that will keep things fair while still allowing for a quickly moving program for multiple class starts.”

In addition to Saturday’s vintage motocross program, riders in Friday’s hare scrambles race will also compete on the new track as part of their off-road loop through the woods course. For Sunday’s post-vintage and non-current classes, the obstacles will be made even more challenging for the newer bikes.

All entry proceeds from the AMA Racing Vintage Grand Championships are donated to the Motorcycle Hall of Fame, which is dedicated to promoting and preserving the heritage of motorcycle competition and the motorcycling lifestyle. The Motorcycle Hall of Fame Museum is located on the AMA campus in Pickerington, Ohio.

Both online entry and downloadable PDF entry forms, along with complete rules and classes, are available at AMAVintageMotorcycleDays.com > Race Your Vintage Bike. The direct link is http://www.americanmotorcyclist.com/events/AMAVintageMotorcycleDays/VintageRacing.aspx.

In addition to class entry, competitors must also purchase a ticket to AMA Vintage Motorcycle Days for access to the Mid-Ohio Sports Car Course facility. Tickets to AMA Vintage Motorcycle Days can be purchased online at MidOhio.com.

Henry Wiles is 2011 AMA Racing Dirt Track Grand Championships Honoree

July 8th, 2011 No comments

PICKERINGTON, Ohio — On July 25-31 in Du Quoin, Ill., the AMA Racing Dirt Track Grand Championships will crown the best amateur racers in short-track, TT, half-mile and mile amateur dirt-track competition. Attending as this year’s event honoree will be AMA Pro Racing Grand National Championship racer Henry Wiles.

“I’m really excited to be serving as the event honoree this year,” Wiles said. “As an amateur who raced the Grand Championships, it was an exciting time to do some traveling and race against guys I never competed against before. You find out a lot more about yourself, and it’s cool to gain the experience that comes with that.”

AMA Director of Racing Joe Bromley said that Wiles is a good role model for the young racers vying for AMA Racing National Championships.

“It’s great that established pros can come back to the AMA Racing Dirt Track Grand Championships and advise tomorrow’s stars on the best path to success,” Bromley said. “Plus, it’s a good opportunity for the kids to see on one level that their heroes are just like them — diehard enthusiasts who are addicted to the rush that comes from racing on two wheels.”

Rosanna Grzebinski, who along with her husband Patrick Grzebinski owns North America Action Sports, the group that is partnering with the AMA to promote and operate the 2011 AMA Racing Dirt Track Grand Championships, said Wiles will provide an invaluable service to the amateur racers at the event.

“We are thrilled that Henry will join us at the AMA Racing Dirt Track Grand Championships this summer,” Grzebinski said. “In addition to being available throughout the week, he’ll be our featured guest at Wednesday evening’s Chillin’ with Henry Wiles, where we’ll all sit around, enjoy some ice cream and ask Henry just what it takes to be a top pro in AMA Pro Grand National Championship competition.”

Wiles joins riders such as Chris Carr, Kenny Coolbeth, Bryan Smith and JR Schnabel who have served as event honorees. He said that he’s looking forward to offering advice to the young racers.

“Current pro racers need to help lead the new crop of riders in the right direction, so they’re not scratching their heads the same way I was,” Wiles said. “I didn’t know enough to ask questions until much later, and it was already ‘go’ time. So to be able to offer some advice and be available to answer questions for the parents and riders means a lot to me, and I hope it means a lot to the racers, as well.”

Wiles added that the Du Quoin facility provides an excellent location for the event.

“The riders will have fun on all these tracks — the short-track, TT, half-mile and mile,” Wiles said. “Of course, it’s always exciting the first time you get out on the mile, so that will be really fun. My best advice for those new to the mile is not to get in over your head. Always remember that you can make a lot up on the next lap if you don’t do a perfect lap. You don’t have to pass everybody in the first corner.”

The AMA Racing Dirt Track Grand Championships crown Grand National champions based on their accumulated points in all four dirt-track disciplines. The top riders compete for the AMA Dirt Track Horizon Award, which honors the amateur racer poised for success on the pro level. Racers field traditional dirt-trackers and the latest DTX-machinery. DTX bikes begin as showroom-fresh motocross bikes that are then fitted with dirt-track tires, suspension and other modifications.
