DAY TWO AT THE BONNEVILLE SALT FLATS – DELAYED START BUT RECORDS STILL BROKEN

August 31st, 2010 No comments

One quick team photo before we hit the course!

The Krew had a delayed start to racing yesterday because of rain…but they made up for the lost time once they were able to get on the course.  Below are some photos from yesterday and an update from Laura Klock.  She is wearing the hat of a racer and the hat of a mother…what huge responsibilities and an awesome perspective!

FROM LAURA:  Wow what a day. We were up and ready to go at sunrise, only to find out that it had rained enough the night before and racing was postponed. Check back at 10 am. So the krew headed to the salt flats cafe, had breakfast and strategized of course.

At 11:30 a.m. we were told they were going to check the track around 3, and then it started raining again. This is our 5th year out here and I’ve never experienced rain out on the salt. Interesting!

The sun came out though and it got hot quick, so we were ALL in line ready to roll before 3! Wow can you see Team Klock Werks coming when we roll up…6 bikes. Gives you goosebumps! They kept us together the best they could so one after the other we had successful passes, so successful that 5 of us did returns right after!

Records went down!! Erika, Karlee, Michelle, and Chris each has SO FAR taken the records in their classes, and I was able to increase the speed on the Victory Vision enough to up mine! This could change of course as more people run, but right now we are headed out again to start day 3. It’s COLD this morning but will warm up quick.

Klock Werks Race team bikes...definitely make a statement of unity!

Laura on her Victory Vision – increased her record from last year already!

Karlee doing some last minute mental preparation...or some shut eye while she waits in line??

Chris – lookin’ good in his leathers! So I gotta go race!

More to come…both of our daughters went faster than mom yesterday!! Personal bests for each of them. Pretty cool for me, that’s for sure!!   God gave us fast angels, so stay tuned in to our websites, http://www.kustombaggers.com/index.htm

COOLBETH AND HARLEY TEAM BATTLE TO THIRD AT THE INDY MILE

Season Points Race Tightens as Kopp Finishes Sixth

INDIANAPOLIS, Ind. (Aug. 28, 2010) – Harley-Davidson® Screamin’ Eagle® factory rider Kenny Coolbeth placed third in the Grand National Twins main at the Lucas Oil Indy Mile at the Indiana State Fairgrounds. The 12th round of the AMA Pro K&N Filters Grand National Championship presented by Motorcycle-Superstore.com was won by Bryan Smith on a Kawasaki.

Smith was the fast qualifier for the main and finished third in the four-lap Dash for Cash bonus race behind Lancaster Harley-Davidson rider Chris Carr and King Kustoms/KK Motorcycle Supply rider Sammy Halbert, also on a Harley-Davidson.

Carr led the field at the start of the 25-lap main event, with American Agip/Lloyd Brothers Ducati rider Joe Kopp and Zanotti Racing rider Jake Johnson in second and third positions. Coolbeth finished the first lap in seventh place. The race was stopped for a crash by Steven Bonsey on lap three, and Carr again took the lead on the re-start, with Smith in second and Johnson in third. Smith got past Carr on lap six, and the pair of veteran riders began to open a gap on the rest of the field. Coolbeth worked his way through traffic and passed Johnson to take third place on lap 11, with Carr now holding a slim lead over Smith. Now more than a second behind the leaders and with no drafting help available, Coolbeth was stuck in third place. Smith and Carr continued to battle, with Smith taking the official lead on lap 17 and then holding off the seven-time champion Carr in the closing laps. Coolbeth finished the race 2.398 seconds behind Smith. Johnson was fourth, Halbert finished fifth and Kopp, the Grand National Championship points leader, finished in sixth place.

“Once I got up to third I was pushing hard to catch Carr and Smith,” said Coolbeth. “I was hoping they’d get caught up in their own battle and slow each other down. But my bike started to lose power on about lap 20 and that was it. I guess the factory Harley-Davidson and I both gave it all we had tonight. We’ve just got to stay determined and try to win some races now.”

After 12 events in the AMA Pro K&N Filters Grand National Championship, Kopp has 221 points and leads the series by only 12 points. Halbert is second with 209 points, and Johnson is third with 207 points. Blue Springs Harley-Davidson rider Jared Mees, who finished eighth at Indianapolis, is fourth with 198 points, followed by KK Motorcycle Supply/Mike & Eddie Adkins rider Henry Wiles with 188 points and Coolbeth in sixth with 179 points.

The AMA Grand National Twins will next race September 5 on the Springfield Mile at the Illinois State Fairgrounds in Springfield, Ill.

Repsol Honda's Dani Pedrosa took his third win of the season at the Indy circuit on Sunday.

Sunday, August 29, 2010

Repsol Honda’s Dani Pedrosa sealed his third MotoGP victory of the 2010 season on Sunday at the Indianapolis circuit. His win in Round 11 is the first time the Spaniard has taken more than two wins in a single season. Pedrosa was followed by American Ben Spies who, despite losing grip in the final half of the contest, held on to finish second at his home race. For the first time this season, Championship leader Jorge Lorenzo finished lower than second after getting a poor start in fifth-place. The Fiat Yamaha rider rounded out the top-three finishers in third while his teammate, Valentino Rossi, took fourth after suffering a total of three crashes over the weekend.

“Of course I shouldn’t be disappointed with third-place but at the same time I’m not happy with my race today,” said Lorenzo. ”I didn’t ride as well as I could have and I didn’t get a good start. The conditions were incredibly hard and I simply didn’t have the physical strength to push as hard or do the same times I did in practice; it was like a race in Malaysia! The track was so slippery and it was very difficult to use the tires as you wanted to, I think honestly I’m quite lucky to have finished third today. The good thing is we took some points and now I have to concentrate on recovering before Misano because we don’t have much time.”

Spies had a great start from pole position and took the early lead in the contest. Also getting a solid start from fifth on the grid was Pedrosa, who quickly maneuvered ahead of his Honda teammate, Andrea Dovizioso, and settled into second-place. Lorenzo and Rossi followed in fourth and fifth respectively while Ducati’s Nicky Hayden was pushed back to sixth following an incident which caused his knee slider to come loose.

Despite sweltering conditions and poor grip levels, Ben Spies rode to a second-place finish at Indy behind Dani Pedrosa.

In the opening laps Pedrosa made things incredibly difficult on Lorenzo, who tried his hardest to make the pass on Pedrosa for second. San Carlo Honda’s Marco Melandri suffered an early fall while in seventh which put an early end to his day.

On Lap 5 Hayden was passed by his Ducati teammate, Casey Stoner, for sixth-place. Further back Mika Kallio and Alvaro Bautista were running in ninth and tenth respectively as Pedrosa began to close in on Spies for the lead. In one swift move Pedrosa flew by Spies on Lap 6 during the start/finish straight. The Spaniard then began to pull away from the American after setting the fastest times lap after lap.

Meanwhile Stoner, who had been been struggling with grip levels with his Ducati machine all weekend long, lost the front-end at Turn 11. The Aussie was forced to call it quits when the crash broke his handlebar. Yamaha Tech 3’s Colin Edwards also retired early after experiencing minimal grip levels from his hard option rear tire.

On Lap 7 Lorenzo moved into third-place ahead of Dovizioso while Pedrosa continued pulling away from Spies. Further back Rossi was more than nine seconds adrift of Pedrosa in fifth-place as he started pressuring Dovizioso for fourth.

“This was a good race for us after the weekend,” Rossi said. ”Fourth is quite good in the circumstances but the important thing is that my rhythm in the race was strong and I felt much happier on the bike. I did some good laps and I wasn’t too far from the other Yamahas, but unfortunately I paid a lot for my lack of fitness in this heat and in the end I had to stop pushing because I didn’t have any strength left in my body. I’m happy though because we came back to a good setting and with me riding well, and if you consider I had three small crashes in the weekend, fourth isn’t so bad. Now we will look forward to Misano, my home race!”

With nine laps remaining Spies began showing signs of tire wear, and it appeared that Lorenzo may be within striking distance.

Valentino Rossi took fourth-place at Indy despite crashing four times over the weekend.

Fiat Yamaha's Jorge Lorenzo (#99) took his first finish below second-place in the '10 season at Indy behind and Spies.

Despite an extremely hot track surface and sweltering conditions, Pedrosa rode a consistent race out front to finish more than three and a half second ahead of Spies. Spies held it together in second with Lorenzo taking third after not being able to close in on the rookie. Rossi eventually made the pass on Dovizioso for fourth and Hayden, without any knee slider, crossed the line sixth and more than 35 seconds adrift of Pedrosa. Only eight-hundredths of a second separated San Carlo Honda’s Marco Simoncelli and Rizla Suzuki’s Alvaro Bautista as they took the checkers in seventh and eighth respectively.

“It was a hard and very difficult race because it was so hot that you could feel the heat coming from the bike and from the ground,” Bautista said. ”It made it a very physical race, but that was also a good test for me to see how my body had healed and at the end I still felt strong. I lost a few places at the start, but I was able to overtake other riders very quickly and I got behind Kallio and decided to follow him because he had a good rhythm and I didn’t want to use all my energy with a long race ahead. I finished in the top-10 and we did a good job through the whole weekend.”

Pracmac Racing Ducati’s Aleix Espargaro was nearly eight seconds behind in ninth, with Ducati’s Hector Barbera rounding out the top-10 finishers.

Spies now moves into sixth-place in the championship – just one point ahead of Hayden. Lorenzo still leads the series by 68 points, and Pedrosa has made up nine points on the leader after taking the victory at Indianapolis.

Dr. Ochs received the SMSA Annual Chairperson’s Award for his “Outstanding Contributions to Motorcycle Safety” in national rider education and training. It was presented by SMSA Executive Committee member Ken Kiphart from the Nevada Department of Public Safety.

Each year the SMSA recognizes an individual whose contributions to motorcyclist safety has moved motorcycle rider education and training forward by consistently providing outstanding work and support. The award is intended to recognize the individual’s commitment and contributions to motorcycle safety at local, state, and national levels. Nominations are voted upon by a committee composed of the current and former Chairpersons of the SMSA.
“Without fail Ray Ochs has served the needs of current and prospective motorcyclists across the country with great passion and expertise,” said MSF President Tim Buche. “His leadership and vision have been instrumental in bringing the MSF’s Rider Education and Training System to fruition, offering training and safety renewal opportunities for riders at all skill levels. Among his achievements, he has also been responsible for ‘training the trainers’ and has logged hundreds of hours leading professional development workshops for MSF RiderCoaches and RiderCoach Trainers. Currently Ochs is working with over fifty subject matter experts through the RETSDOT to sharpen the focus of MSF’s RETS and redefine MSF’s basic RiderCourse. His many contributions will benefit generations of riders to come, and we’re pleased that his achievements have been acknowledged by the SMSA Executive Committee with this prestigious award.”

Dr. Ochs has more than 40 years of experience in education, training and leadership functions and has been associated with MSF development programs since its inception in 1973. Ochs’s association with the MSF and the RETSDOT program continued in 1997 through a contract with the Traffic Safety Institute at Eastern Kentucky University. Ochs joined the MSF in a leadership position in 2002 where he develops and maintains national curriculum and training functions related to the MSF Rider Education and Training System. Ochs has owned multiple motorcycles in his 44-plus years on the road and currently rides a touring bike. He became an MSF-certified instructor in 1973 and a chief instructor in 1980, and has conducted motorcycle safety training programs and presented papers and presentations in 48 states and throughout the world supporting DOD safety programs and various International Safety Conferences.

Ochs began his career in 1970 as a high school teacher and baseball coach at LeBlond High School in St. Joseph, Mo. He entered academia as a graduate assistant at the Driver Education Instructional Demonstration Center at Indiana State University.

Upon graduating, he was appointed lecturer at Appalachian State University in North Carolina, where he taught undergraduate safety courses, managed laboratory functions for the traffic safety teacher preparation program, implemented a motorcycle safety workshop for driver education teachers and served as a consultant for the North Carolina Department of Education. In 1974, he became an instructor for the Driver Education Center at East Carolina University, where he taught undergraduate and graduate programs in driver and traffic safety education, expanded the university’s rider education curriculum and collaborated in the development of the state motorcycle safety program.

Ochs then joined the faculty of Eastern Kentucky University in 1976 as assistant professor at the Traffic Safety Institute, later to earn full professor rank and become the institute’s coordinator. Serving EKU for 27 years, he was responsible for expanding the undergraduate curriculum in driver and traffic safety education, implementing several new courses including a for-credit university course in motorcycle safety education, collaborating in the development of legislation for the state motorcycle safety program and serving as project director for several grant-funded state projects including the motorcycle rider education program and other traffic safety projects.

The Motorcycle Safety Foundation promotes rider safety through rider training systems, operator licensing tests and public information programs. The MSF works with the federal government, state agencies, the military, and others to offer training for all skill levels so riders can enjoy a lifetime of safe, responsible motorcycling. Standards established by the MSF have been internationally recognized since 1973.

MSF PARTICIPATES AT ANNUAL SMSA CONFERENCE WITH MULTIPLE BREAKOUT SESSIONS AND STAKEHOLDER MEETINGS

August 26th, 2010 No comments

Staff Addresses New CORE Curriculum, the Success – and Complexity – of Delivering RETS, RiderCoach Certification, Operator Licensing, QA and More

IRVINE, Calif., August 26, 2010 – As part of its mission – To make motorcycling safer, and more enjoyable, by ensuring access to lifelong quality education and training for current and prospective riders and by advocating a safer riding environment – the Motorcycle Safety Foundation (MSF) champions safety efforts by sharing its institutional knowledge and the subject-matter expertise of its highly-credentialed staff at regional events, and at national and international motorcycle safety conferences.

One such event is the annual conference for the National Association of State Motorcycle Safety Administrators (SMSA), held in Columbus, Ohio, August 20-22, 2010. MSF’s leadership role in the motorcycle safety community was underscored by key MSF staffers leading breakout sessions, meeting with stakeholders and being available to provide assistance and answer attendees’ questions on technical or training matters.

Also in conjunction with the event, the MSF hosted a MSF state coordinator appreciation dinner, debuted an all-new, 36-page annual edition of Safe Cycling, complete with updated MSF history and milestones, and conducted a RiderCoach Trainer (RCT) Conference for over 140 RCTs the Monday following the conference.

In addition, conference attendees had the opportunity to learn more about the challenges and complexity of successfully delivering the comprehensive Rider Education and Training System, the cornerstone of which is the MSF Basic RiderCourse, to a vast network that served over 400,000 riders in 2009 alone. MSF staffed a display that offered a behind-the-scenes, detailed look at the day-to-day functionality and dimension of the RETS delivery infrastructure; a system that took the MSF many years of research, planning, collaboration and millions of dollars to develop, and one with numerous built-in capabilities for continuous-loop feedback and improvement.

“We believe that developing good riding character – how a rider behaves when he or she is on their own, away from the watchful guidance of a RiderCoach or observations by law – is an ultimate goal. The MSF provides training and support to develop riders who make good real world decisions: to ride within the traffic laws, within their own personal limits, unimpaired, focused on the tasks of riding, mindful to refresh their skills and attentive to making wise risk management decisions. The SMSA Conference, workshops and breakout sessions allow us the opportunity to share this vision,” said MSF President Tim Buche.

Topics addressed in the breakout sessions and workshops included:

·        Herding Cats II: Taking Theory Into Practice – Al Hydeman
Principles of group dynamics specifically as it relates to the BRC classroom.

·        Implementing the Rider Skills Test (RST) in Your State – Jim Heideman
Content of the new licensing exam offered by MSF and a review of the training and materials.

·        QA Team Training – Sherry Williams, Chris Connelly, David Crouch and Keith Sopp
A review of the proven, tested and reliable Quality Assurance specialist training that has been implemented by several state programs.

·        RiderCoach Certification/Re-Certification: Current Issues and Future Actions – Ray Ochs
A description of the new certification requirements MSF is proposing to ensure quality across all MSF curricula (e.g. 3WBRC, SBRC, RRC, IEM, SMARTrainer, ARC, SRC).

MSF staff in attendance included Tim Buche, Chris Connelly (NY), Randy Cooper (GA campus), David Crouch, Charlie Fernandez, Robert Gladden, Dr. Jim Heideman, Al Hydeman, Dr. Ray Ochs, Cathy Rimm, David Smith (NM), Madeline Smith,  Dave Surgenor (PA), Jayson White (OH campus), Dan Williams (WV), Dr. Sherry Williams and Briana Wombacher.

STEWART WITHDRAWS FROM MX, ISSUES APOLOGIES

James Stewart Has Officially Withdrawn From AMA Motocross Competition

Bart Madson

Injured for seven months, James Stewart will stay out of action after a brief return at Unadilla, the Yamaha star sitting out the rest of the 2010 AMA Motocross season.

James Stewart has officially withdrawn from AMA Motocross competition, the San Manuel Yamaha rider not returning to racing action until the 2011 Supercross season. A team press release cites slow recovery of Stewart’s broken wrist, which terminated his previous Supercross campaign and the Motocross season thus far, as the determining factor in the decision.

Stewart made a much-heralded return to Motocross last round at Unadilla. The former champ logged a third-place result in the first moto, tussling over second with FIM MX wild card Clemente Desalle. Stewart was unable to finish the second moto, however, pulling off the track after four laps. An official statement from Team San Manuel Yamaha announcing his permanent exit from the 2010 season explained the Unadilla Moto 2 DNF as “lack of physical preparation and challenges with the bike set up forced him off the track in Moto 2.”

In the statement, Stewart goes on to issue a formal apology to fans and sponsors: “I hope my fans will understand. I have said before that I wanted to be on the track starting in Sacramento. But the slow healing nature of my wrist injury made it impossible to do that. Watching race after race and not being a part of the series was very hard. All along my motivation was to get back to racing and return to the Motocross National Series for my fans and sponsors. The reality is, though my wrist is feeling great, I’m not ready to race at this level. As much as I’d like to be out there, I need more time to prepare so that I don’t put my entire career at risk by getting injured again. A younger James might not have been mature enough to make this decision, but I’ve learned a lot in recent years and sometimes you have to do what’s right, despite what’s in your heart. I’d like to apologize to my fans, the Outdoor National series and my sponsors. You’ve been incredibly supportive of me throughout these recent months. I am sorry if what I’ve said or done has disappointed anyone in any way, but I’ll be back on the track at Anaheim 1 and ready to race. I plan to work hard over the next few months and do what I know I need to do to prepare for a chance at the next Supercross Championship title”

Team San Manuel Yamaha Team Manager Larry Brooks goes on to say: “We had every intention of racing Southwick and beyond, but sometimes you have to see the bigger picture and make a decision based on what’s right, not on what you’d like to do at the time. We’re a Team and we have to do what we feel is best to ensure we have every opportunity to win the next Championship.”

Passed over for the Motocross of Nations squad, Stewart is now gone for the remaining Motocross Nationals.Stewart made headlines after Unadilla when he criticized his being passed over for the 2010 Motocross of Nations squad.

In earlier statement from Team San Manuel Yamaha regarding the MXoN snub (Stewart Feels ‘Lied to’ Over MXoN Decision), Stewart went so far as to say “I feel like I was straight-up lied to.” The statement also made clear that a factor in Stewart’s return for the final four motos of the 2010 season was his chances of making the MXoN team.

“But the other main reason I chose to come back for the last four, beginning with Unadilla, was because of a discussion I had with the decision makers for Team USA in Colorado this year regarding the Red Bull Motocross of Nations. At the time, I was told that if I was to make my recovery, begin testing, and get back to racing by Unadilla, that I would be given a spot (or at least a shot at a spot) for the final team. Being on the MXoN team in the past has been one of the greatest experiences of my entire career, so after they told me I had a shot, my team and I were excited, and began to get ready to race outdoors!”

With Stewart’s withdrawal from the remaining MX rounds and his absence from the MXoN, J Stew fans will have to wait until the January 8th opener at Anaheim 1 to see Number 7 back in action.
