VALENTINO ROSSI YAMAHA R1 TO BE AUCTIONED FOR CHARITY

July 30th, 2010 1 comment

From a press release issued by Bonhams & Butterfields…

San Francisco – 28 July 2010 – Bonhams is very proud to have been selected to represent a truly one-of-a-kind motorcycle offered in collaboration with the most successful motorcycle racer of his era, Valentino Rossi.

As written about in the April issues of both Cycle World and Motorcyclist, a highly upgraded and customized 2009 Yamaha YZF-R1 1000cc – the civilian version of the MotoGP bike campaigned by World Champion Rossi – will be offered for sale at Bonhams’ annual Classic California auction this coming November.

Sporting Rossi’s personal “Five Continents” AGV helmet design, this amazing and very specialized motorcycle was the brainchild of former racing champion and AMA Hall of Famer Don Emde.  Emde founded the non-profit Friends of Riders For Health to further the cause in America of Riders For Health, a charitable organization that brings life-saving medicines to people in remote areas of Africa by way of motorcycles. As a way to generate funds for Riders For Health, Emde conceived of this project and then invited the “who’s who” of the motorcycling world to participate.

“Once we got Rossi’s blessing, everyone jumped aboard,” says Emde. Yamaha Motor Corp. USA donated the brand new stock machine, Aldo Drudi translated the graphics from Rossi’s helmet to the R1’s special bodywork imported from Italy, Roland Sands donated Ronin wheels, Bridgestone added BT-003 tires, Öhlins gave suspension, Akrapovic provided exhaust, EBC did brakes, and the list goes on – Vortex, Goodridge, Dynojet, etc. Just with improvements the bike’s value is nearly $30,000, and that’s without the significance of the project and Rossi’s involvement.

This incredible team effort R1, personally autographed by Rossi, will be presented in “track day” trim but it is fully street legal and will be offered with all the necessary accessories and California title. On top of that, Yamaha will donate a day at the Yamaha Champions Riding School for the winning bidder.

The Bonhams Classic California Auction will be held at the Petersen Automotive Museum in Los Angeles on Saturday, November 13th. Parties interested in bidding on this extraordinary machine – in person or remotely – may register to bid and order a sales catalog at bonhams.com/petersen.

Sellers interested in consigning a unique collector car or motorcycle to this anticipated sale may call 415-391-4000 or e-mail one of the following Bonhams specialists:

GROUPS OPPOSING ETHANOL INCREASE IN GAS LAUNCH CAMPAIGN FOR MORE TESTING

July 30th, 2010 No comments

Environmental and industry groups that frequently oppose each other on a broad range of policy issues are launching a joint campaign calling on Congress to require thorough and objective scientific testing before allowing an increase in the amount of ethanol in gasoline.

Raising strong concerns about consumer safety and environmental protection, the groups have joined forces to sponsor an ad with the tagline “Say NO to untested E15″ as part of an effort to persuade Congress and the Environmental Protection Agency to reject calls by some in the ethanol industry to allow the amount of ethanol in gasoline to increase by 50 percent. The ads began running on July 22.

Some 36 groups have also signed a letter that went to the majority and minority leaders of the U.S. Senate urging opposition to any amendment to the coming energy bill that would authorize the sale of gasoline with more than 10 percent ethanol.

Most gasoline sold in the United States contains 10 percent ethanol (E10). Some ethanol lobbyists are seeking to boost that to 15 percent (E15), or to compromise with a boost to 12 percent (E12).

Ethanol burns hotter than gasoline and corrodes soft metals, plastics and rubber. The groups collectively believe more testing is needed to determine how much ethanol is too much for different types of existing engines to use safely without risking engine failure that could leave, for example, a motorcycle unable to move in the blazing heat of a desert.

The American Motorcyclist Association (AMA) also believes more research is needed.

“The AMA supports the use of cleaner-burning fuels but we are concerned that, if the allowable level of ethanol is raised, it could result in premature engine damage or failure while a bike is being ridden on a highway,” says AMA Government Relations Manager Szauter. “We are also concerned about any degradation in performance, fuel economy and rideability that may result from the long-term use of blended fuels with greater than 10 percent ethanol.”

The sponsors of the ad are: The Environmental Working Group; Natural Resources Defense Council; The Hispanic Institute; Engine Manufacturers Association; International Snowmobile Manufacturers Association; Motorcycle Industry Council; National Marine Manufacturers Association; Outdoor Power Equipment Institute; American Frozen Food Institute; American Meat Institute; Grocery Manufacturers Association; Snack Food Association; American Petroleum Institute; National Association of Truck Stop Operators; and The National Petrochemical & Refiners Association.

Briar Bauman wins 2010 AMA Dirt Track Horizon Award

July 29th, 2010 No comments

PICKERINGTON, Ohio — Speed wins races. Consistency wins American Motorcyclist Association (AMA) championships. That was the message delivered at the 2010 AMA Racing Dirt Track Grand Championships, which ran July 17-23 at the Du Quoin State Fairgrounds in Du Quoin, Ill.

Thanks to his solid performances in four dirt-track racing disciplines and three classes all week, Briar Bauman from Salinas, Calif., won the 2010 AMA Dirt Track Horizon Award. Bauman took home two AMA Racing Dirt Track Grand Championships for the week: 450cc Modified and 451cc-Open Modified. He also scored third overall in the 251cc-500cc DTX class behind Ryan Wells and Hayden Gillim. In individual main events, Bauman had six wins, four seconds, a third and a fourth.

“This was one of our closest AMA Horizon Award competitions in recent memory,” said AMA Director of Racing Joe Bromley. “Briar, Ryan and Hayden are exceptional athletes and motorcycle racers, and they all will go on to have successful professional careers, whether on the dirt oval or the roadrace course. Each one is dedicated, passionate and professional. We’re proud of all of them, but this week it was Briar who displayed a slight edge in consistent performance when it mattered most on the track, a quality that all champions must have at every level.”

Bauman gave his support crew credit for the honor.

“There’s no way I could have done this without my family and sponsors,” he said. “I can’t thank my Grandma enough. She’s always been there. I knew there were two other riders battling it out, and we were all really close. I just felt like I could fly! To think they chose me and that my consistency paid off. It’s amazing!”

Although the AMA Horizon Award is the highest-profile special award at the AMA Racing Dirt Track Grand Championships, other honors recognize various competitors for standout performances.

The AMA Fast Brain Award recognizes a rider whose speed on the track is matched by stellar grades in the classroom. The 2010 Fast Brain award was presented to Chalon Spore from Metropolis, Ill.

This year, the AMA Fast Brain Award included a $2,000 scholarship, funded by AMA members, including 2010 event special guest and AMA Motorcycle Hall of Famer Bill Werner, event honoree Byran Smith, AMA Board of Directors Chairman Stan Simpson, 2009 AMA Grand National Twins Champion Jared Mees, 2010 AMA Racing Dirt Track Grand Championship Honoree Bryan Smith, the Belleville Enduro Team, Don Schopieray, Mike Sponseller, dirt-track fan Shawn Ralls and AMA Racing.

Spore, who graduated from high school in May, is preparing to go to a local community college and was elated to be chosen as the winner.

“This will really help to pay my college expenses,” Spore said. “When I filled out my registration for riding, I saw the information on the Fast Brain and thought, ‘Well, I might as well submit my grades.’ I never thought I would win. I want to thank all of those who gave money to make this happen. I will certainly put it to good use.”

The AMA Youth Dirt Track Rider of the Year was Brandon Price from Sparks Glencoe, Md. Price won the grand championship in both 65cc classes while dabbling in the 85cc ranks, making every main event.

“I really didn’t expect that I was going to get it,” Price said. “Dalton [Gauthier] won three races on the 85, and I didn’t think I would get it.”

The Vet/Senior Rider of the year was awarded to Senior Vet 50+ Champion Dan Shaw from Decker, Mich. Shaw actually traveled home for work after the TT, but when local inclement weather canceled those plans, he was free to return to the races. He re-loaded his truck, and he and his nephew set out for the 600-plus mile trip back to Du Quoin, showing up in time to ride the half-mile.

“I didn’t realize this award would be given,” Shaw said. “I just wanted to come back because I was having fun.”

The AMA Racing Dirt Track Grand Championships crown Grand National champions based on their accumulated points in all four dirt-track disciplines: short-track, TT, half-mile and mile racing. The top riders compete for the AMA Dirt Track Horizon Award, which honors the amateur racer poised for success on the pro level. Racers field traditional dirt-trackers, all-terrain vehicles and the latest DTX-machinery. DTX bikes are a fast-growing segment of dirt-track racing. They begin as showroom-fresh motocross bikes that are then fitted with dirt-track tires, suspension and other modifications.

For more information on all the disciplines sanctioned by the AMA, see AMARacing.com.

THE BEST OF DAYS AND THE WORST OF DAYS

July 27th, 2010 No comments

Monterey, CalifThe AMA Pro Daytona SportBike event at the Red Bull U.S. Grand Prix at Mazda Raceway Laguna Seca, July 24-25 proved to be both the best of days and the worst of days for the Crozier Roberson Motorsports/DNA Energy Drink Team.

Gridded in the 4th spot, Bobby Fong powered off the startline like he had been shot out of a canon. Passing the pole sitter, Fong took over first place before the first lap was even completed. Piloting his DNA Energy Drink Ducati around the 2.238-mile famed Mazda Raceway Laguna Seca track, Fong continued to dominate for 15 laps.

“I got caught up in some lapped riders,” he explains. Cardenas was right behind me and unfortunately in the heat of battle I lost it going into turn two. I couldn’t be more bummed. But we definitely served notice on the field and showed them things to come. The Crozier Roberson crew gave me an excellent bike. It couldn’t have been any better and come the next race, we will be ready to put DNA Energy Drink in the Number One spot.”

“Our entire time is incredibly proud of Bobby,” says co-team owner Robbie Roberson. “He just keeps getting better and better and we know that victory is just around the corner.”

Teammate Michel Beck brought home the 9th place spot…his best finish at Mazda Raceway to date.

“I think we could have bettered that,” says Beck at the end of the 23 lap race. “I got a decent start, but just didn’t push enough in the beginning. My goal is to keeping finishing in the top ten and with this team behind me there is no doubt I can do that and more.”

For newly crowned SuperSport West champion Joey Pascarella, the AMA Pro SuperSport race didn’t yield the results he was hoping for. He unfortunately shot off the track in turn 9 which lost him a number of positions.

“Joey came right back,” adds team manager and co-owner Mark Crozier. “He turned the fast lap of the race, but there wasn’t enough time to make it back to the front. I am incrediblly proud of everyone on this team. Their dedication and motivation is 100 % plus and it definitely shows. The industry is sitting up and taking notice and we plan to make ourselves even better known in the upcoming races.”

Crozier Roberson Motorsports is sponsored by: DNA Energy Drink, Quality Brands, Inc., FMF, Arai Helmets, Race Tech, Motion Pro, Pit Bull, EBC Brakes, EK, Melillimoto Ducati, Moto-Heaven.com, XES, Thrust Company, HEL, Woodcraft, Armour Bodies, Motul, Puma, Held Gloves, GP Tech, Active, Zero Gravity and Christopher Bean Coffee.

AMA MOTORCYCLE HALL OF FAME RAFFLE WINNER CREDITS GIRLFRIEND FOR WINNING TICKET

July 27th, 2010 No comments

PICKERINGTON, Ohio — David Beall of Aliquippa, Pa., gave credit where credit is due. He said if it wasn’t for his girlfriend, Judy Musta, he wouldn’t have won the Vic World-restored 1969 Honda CB750 Four and the like-new, unrestored 1965 Honda Cub in the 2010 American Motorcyclist Association (AMA) Motorcycle Hall of Fame bike raffle.

“The tickets were sent to me in the mail — five of them — and I took them to my girlfriend’s house, threw them down on the table, and they set there for a week or two,” Beall said. “My girlfriend finally filled them out and then we chucked them in the mail. I didn’t think I would win. I just chalked it up as a donation.”

Then, when Beall heard he did win, he couldn’t believe it.

“I thought it was a joke,” said Beall, a 19-year AMA member. “I thought my friends were playing a joke on me. I don’t picture myself winning something like that.”

Beall’s winning ticket was announced at AMA Vintage Motorcycle Days on Saturday, July 10, at the Mid-Ohio Sports Car Course in Lexington, Ohio. AMA Vintage Motorcycle Days, which featured Husqvarna as Marque of the Year for 2010 and Malcolm Smith as grand marshal, is an annual fundraiser for the AMA Motorcycle Hall of Fame in Pickerington, Ohio, which honors the men and women in the Hall of Fame.

“I’ve worked on a lot of those overhead cam Hondas in my day,” said Beall, who co-owns the Beall & Nairin bike shop 40 miles northwest of Pittsburgh. “We do mostly service and parts, custom work and restoration. It’s a ‘ma-and-pa’ type store. We used to be a Laverda dealer and an MZ dealer. So, we have our own little museum now. I’m going to put the Hondas in my shop and get some of my English bikes up to that standard and show them as well.”

But that doesn’t mean the Hondas won’t see the road from time to time.

“I think I will take the CB out and ride it,” Beall said. “But I want to keep it in a good environment so it will be here for a long time.”

As for the Cub?

“Judy thinks that would be a great bike for her to ride around,” Beall said. “That’s up in the air. Something newer might be better.”

Beall has been riding since 1969. His first bike was a 1976 Kawasaki S1, a three-cylinder two-stroke, which he still owns. The bike is now set up as a drag racer.

Two bikes that would look good sitting next to the S1 in Beall’s garage would be the 1973 Kawasaki Z1 and 2010 Kawasaki Z1000 — the motorcycles in the 2010-11 AMA Motorcycle Hall of Fame bike raffle. VICTORY FOR HINES AND HARLEY V-ROD IN DENVER DRAGS

Hines Moves into Second Place in NHRA Pro Stock Motorcycle Points

MORRISON, Colo. (July 25, 2010) – Screamin’ Eagle®/Vance & Hines rider Andrew Hines claimed his second NHRA Pro Stock Motorcycle event victory of the season, riding a Harley-Davidson V-Rod® to a final-round win over Geico Suzuki rider Karen Stoffer at the Mopar Mile-High NHRA Nationals at Bandimere Speedway. With the win, Hines moves into second place in Pro Stock Motorcycle season points.

“This is still a home-town win for the Screamin’ Eagle team,” said Hines, who grew up in Trinidad, Colo., which for years was also the home base for the Vance & Hines racing operation before the team moved to Indiana. “We have a lot of friends in the area who come out for this race. I don’t think our Harley-Davidson was the quickest or the fastest bike on the track, but it was very consistent and ran straight down the track. Sometimes that’s what it takes to win.”

Hines qualified fifth for the event with an elapsed time (ET) of 7.286 seconds. Screamin’ Eagle/Vance and Hines rider Eddie Krawiec qualified sixth on a Harley-Davidson V-Rod with a 7.295-second run. Racers Edge Suzuki rider Michael Phillips was top qualifier and set a new track ET record for the class with a 7.238-second run.

In Sunday eliminations, Krawiec lost in the first round to Pistonator Suzuki rider Craig Treble. Treble used a 0.002-second reaction time and 7.325 ET to beat Krawiec’s 0.065/7.281 run.

Hines moved through the elimination rounds with wins over Suzuki rider LE Tonglet, Suzuki Extended Protection rider Jim Underdahl, and Phillips. Underdahl and Phillips both left the starting line early to hand automatic wins to Hines. Hines had three consecutive “00” lights in the first rounds of eliminations, leaving in 0.006, 0.004, and 0.007 seconds in rounds one, two and three.

“That was kind of scary running zero-zero lights three rounds in a row,” said Hines. “After the first round, I was really backing off at the line, and I was still cutting it close. I would have gone red in round two if I didn’t hold back just a little on purpose. Michael Phillips had a really fast bike today, so he kind of gave us one in the third round. We were lucky all-around today, because the tree was really loose.”

Hines did not take a chance on fouling in the final against Stoffer, who was the number-three qualifier for the event. Hines used a 0.029/7.342 run to post a solid win, as Stoffer ran 0.033/7.402.

“We made an adjustment to the bike for the final, and set it up for a 0.030 light and that’s just what we got,” said Hines, who now has 21 NHRA Pro Stock Motorcycle wins in 35 final-round appearances. “We’ve got some momentum now with one race left before the Countdown starts. The bike is really great off the line but we’d like to find some more speed at the end of the run, so there’s some work to do before the playoffs begin.”

Following 10 rounds of the 17-race 2010 NHRA Pro Stock Motorcycle season, Lucas Oil Buell rider Hector Arana leads in points with 836. Hines moves up to second place with 776 points, with Phillips in third at 746. Al-Anabi Racing Buell rider Matt Smith is fourth with 716 points, followed by Lincoln Tech Suzuki rider Steve Johnson with 648 points and Krawiec in sixth place with 562 points.

The next Pro Stock Motorcycle event on the 2010 NHRA Full Throttle Drag Racing Series schedule is the Lucas Oil NHRA Nationals, August 12-15, at Brainerd International Raceway in Brainerd, Minn.
