American Motorcyclist Association Supports EPA Decision

American Motorcyclist Association supports EPA decision to delay ruling on increased ethanol in gasoline

PICKERINGTON, Ohio — The American Motorcyclist Association (AMA) concurs with the decision announced by the federal Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) on June 17 to delay its ruling on whether to allow the ethanol portion of blended gasoline to be increased from the current 10 percent to 15 percent.

“This is encouraging news because much more research needs to be done to be sure that increased levels of ethanol in gasoline are beneficial, rather than damaging, to motorcycle engines and components,” said Imre Szauter, AMA government affairs manager.

“The AMA supports the use of cleaner-burning fuels but we are concerned that, if the allowable level of ethanol is raised, it could result in premature engine damage or failure while a bike is being ridden on a highway,” Szauter explained. “We are also concerned about any degradation in performance, fuel economy and rideability that may result from the long-term use of blended fuels with greater than 10 percent ethanol.”

Growth Energy, an ethanol lobbying group, asked the EPA in March 2009 to allow gasoline to contain up to 15 percent ethanol. The EPA had planned to issue a decision by December 2009 but then said a decision would come in mid-2010. The EPA recently said a decision won’t be made until at least the fall because more tests need to be completed.

Currently, pump gasoline in the United States can contain up to 10 percent ethanol, which is used to increase octane, reduce carbon monoxide emissions and provide an alternative to petroleum-based fuels. Motorcycle manufacturers currently only certify their engines to run on fuels that have a 10 percent or less blend.

Increasing the percentage of ethanol could have a negative impact on motorcycle engines, since burning ethanol creates more heat than conventional gasoline. That has the potential to damage air-cooled motorcycle engines.

Also, fuel systems on bikes may be susceptible to corrosive effects of higher concentrations of ethanol in gas. And while ethanol helps reduce carbon monoxide levels in engine exhaust, it can also increase the levels of oxides of nitrogen, one of the components of smog.

“Until studies show that a higher ethanol blend won’t damage motorcycle or all-terrain vehicle (ATV) engines, and won’t make motorcycles emit more nitrogen oxides than are allowed by the EPA, the AMA can’t support any proposal to allow a higher blend,” Szauter said.

The AMA is a member of AllSAFE, the Alliance for a Safe Alternative Fuels Environment, a group formed to ensure that fuels containing ethanol are promoted in a thoughtful manner. AllSAFE is made up of associations that represent consumer and commercial users of ethanol blends, manufacturers of boats, vehicles, engines and equipment, and retailers who sell gasoline and ethanol-fuel blends.

K&N Filters’ Partnership with AMD builds Momentum for Upcoming World Championship

K&N Filters, the long standing performance standard for internal combustion engines, has signed an agreement with the AMD World Championship of Custom Bike Building to be a full partner in this prestigious event.

Both Johnny Jump and Nick O’Kane of K&N are thrilled with the increased emphasis on the Modified Harley class. K&N air filters have long been the standard for performance when it comes to internal combustion engines, whether for motorcycle or truck engines, or anything in between.

In most cases, exhaust modifications to motorcycles are enhanced by the use of a K&N air filter, typically resulting in a broader power band increase. With the combination of increased power and a lifetime of use, K&N air filters truly are the best performance value on the market today. K&N  and AMD both look forward to hosting another great event in Sturgis for all to enjoy.

The Riverside, California company is well known as the pioneer of high performance pleated paper filter technology and has been a staple for strip, race circuit and street applications for years.

Commenting on the decision to associate their brand with the aims, objectives and status of the World Championship program K&N National Accounts Manager Nick O’Kane said, “We have always sought high profile, high status opportunities to promote the K&N brand in a way that continues its association with and reputation for market leading quality.” “In the Harley-Davidson aftermarket, custom v-twin and performance and tuning industries the World Championship of Custom Bike Building is a prestige opportunity for us to continue that association and keep our brand profile high among the international customer base we manufacture for.”

Experts, history makers take center stage at AMA Vintage Motorcycle Days

PICKERINGTON, Ohio — Despite what we remember from our teen years, sometimes a good lecture is just what we need — especially if it’s about motorcycles. And you’ll find plenty of cool lecture topics at the Mid-Ohio Sports Car Course in Lexington, Ohio, July 9-11, during AMA (American Motorcyclist Association) Vintage Motorcycle Days.

Front and center at the lectern during AMA Vintage Motorcycle Days will be numerous historical figures and industry leaders hosting seminars ranging from riding to racing to restoring vintage motorcycles. School was never this good.

“The seminar program at AMA Vintage Motorcycle Days is one of the most popular features at this event,” said AMA Special Events Manager Tigra Tsujikawa. “Not only do we feature those who have helped write the history of motorcycling, but we include current experts from various fields and disciplines. Topics as diverse as international off-road competition, getting started in vintage racing and practical tips for creating custom bike parts will be coverage.”

All seminars are roughly 90 minutes in duration and are in the Goodyear Tower on the fourth floor, or in the AMA Motorcycle Hall of Fame Tent in the infield of the Mid-Ohio roadrace course.

Several seminars will focus on the 2010 Marque of the Year, Husqvarna. Located at the Hall of Fame Tent, these include “Husqvarna Motorcycles: The People Behind It All” by Gunnar Lindstrom on Friday, July 9, at 10:30 a.m., and “The Early Years of Husqvarna in America,” featuring John Penton, Lindstrom, AMA Vintage Motorcycle Days Grand Marshal Malcolm Smith and Tom White on Saturday, July 10, at 1 p.m.

Fans of off-road racing will get a real treat on Friday at 2:30 p.m. and Sunday, July 11, at 1 p.m. in the Hall of Fame Tent when the 1982 International Six Days Enduro U.S. Trophy Team will re-unite for a discussion about their all-Husqvarna effort that brought home a second-place trophy that year — the highest finish a U.S. team has ever achieved in this storied international competition. The discussion will feature Mark Hyde, Mike Melton, Terry Cunningham, Scot Harden and Wally Wilson.

Also featured will be Bridgestone Motorcycles, the 2010 Classic Club, in talks by Randy Gibbon and Larry Young on Friday at 11:30 a.m., Saturday at 9 a.m., and Sunday at 11:30 a.m. Speaking at the Goodyear Tower, Gibbon and Young will discuss both the high-quality and little-known history of this rare brand.

Perennial AMA Vintage Motorcycle Days speaker Craig Vetter returns this year to discuss motorcycle streamlining and fuel economy. Vetter will present his ideas and lead an open discussion at the Hall of Fame Tent on Friday at 1 p.m. and Saturday at 10:30 a.m.

Running in conjunction with the AMA Racing Vintage Grand Championships, AMA Vintage Motorcycle Days is known by many for its National Championship vintage competition in motocross, trials, hare scrambles, roadracing and dirt track. For those interested in getting started in the sport — certainly one of the least intimidating and most affordable ways to get on the track — vintage racer, promoter and sponsor Don Miller will offer advice in “How to Get Started in Vintage Racing” on Saturday at 3 p.m. in the Goodyear Tower.

Two other major highlights of AMA Vintage Motorcycle Days are the bike shows and North America’s largest swap meet. Both, of course, inspire attendees to take on motorcycle projects of their own. If you want to do it right, you won’t want to miss Bob Vail’s “Building Vintage Motorcycle Specials: Techniques and Tips.” Vail will discuss working with Fiberglas, welding and aluminum castings to make custom parts on Friday at 10 a.m., Saturday at 12 p.m. and Sunday at 1 p.m. in the Goodyear Tower.

Triumph fans can get their fill of technical information on Friday at 2:30 p.m. and Saturday at 10:30 a.m. when Triumph experts John Healy and Don Hutchinson will discuss the details of working with the classic British brand.

Eric Trow will address motorcycling safety in “Ride Like It’s 1969 Classic Lessons for Riding Safely Today” on Friday at 1 p.m., Saturday at 1:30 p.m. and Sunday at 10 a.m. in the Goodyear Tower.

In addition to these seminars, there will be ample opportunity for the public to interact with Grand Marshal Malcolm Smith and other AMA Motorcycle Hall of Famers who will be in attendance.

Held at the world-class Mid-Ohio Sports Car Course, AMA Vintage Motorcycle Days features vintage and post-vintage competition in motocross, trials, harescrambles, roadracing and dirt track. In addition to demo rides of current production bikes, the event includes North America’s largest motorcycle swap meet, educational seminars, bike shows, the Federal Companies/Allied Used Bike Corral, motorcycling seminars, the new product Manufacturers’ Midway, and club corrals featuring marque and regional clubs.

Proceeds from AMA Vintage Motorcycle Days benefit the AMA Motorcycle Hall of Fame. The goal of the Hall of Fame, located on the campus of the AMA in Pickerington, Ohio, is to honor the distinguished men and women whose competitive spirit, passion, vision and entrepreneurship have played a vital role in shaping the sport, lifestyle and business of motorcycling. For more information, call (614) 856-2222, or visit the Hall of Fame’s website at MotorcycleMuseum.org.

Calling all Creative Kids to Enter the “Do the Ride Thing” Video Contest – $10,000 in Prizes!

Kids Helping Kids Ride Safe/Ride Smart

Click the above image to view the “Do the Ride Thing” Contest Announcement Video

IRVINE, Calif., June  2010 – With the busy summer riding season upon us, the ATV Safety Institute (ASI) encourages kids to enter the “Do the Ride Thing” Video Contest. Sponsored by the ASI, the contest runs June 18 to September 6, 2010 and offers 10 prizes totaling $10,000. Students ages six to 18 may enter. The winning 30- and 60-second videos will be used as public service announcements (PSAs) by the ATV Safety Institute.

“What better way to motivate and inform people – especially kids and their parents – about the safe and responsible use of all-terrain vehicles than to have kids create videos that highlight one or more of the ATV Safety Institute’s Golden Rules?” said Paul Vitrano, executive vice president, ASI. “By harnessing the social networking power of YouTube, it gives kids the opportunity to ‘Do the Ride Thing’ and help other kids ride safe/ride smart.”

To enter, kids create a 30- or 60-second video/PSA, upload it to YouTube, and submit an entry form on the ASI website. For official video content requirements, contest rules and entry forms, visit http://www.atvsafety.org/ATV_PSA_Contest/index.html.

There will be three winners in each of the three age categories: 6-10, 11-14, and 15-18. 1st Place winners earn $1,100, 2nd Place is $800, and 3rd Place is $600. Plus, all age categories are eligible to win the $2,500 Grand Prize. The ten prizes total $10,000.

Background

There are nearly ten million ATVs in use across the United States, being operated by more than 35 million Americans. Many ATV owners share their ATVs so it is essential that riders and non-riders alike understand the importance of the safe and responsible use of ATVs.

Summer and holidays are a time when children have more free time to enjoy many activities, including riding ATVs. Nearly 90 percent of youth ATV-related injury incidents occur when a youth is operating an ATV manufactured and intended for use by an adult.  Parental supervision is a key element to a child’s safety and children under the age of 16 must be supervised at all times when operating an ATV. Parents literally hold the key to their children’s safety. Every ATV has an ignition key, and when a parent or guardian controls the key, they control the use.

Consumer Product Safety Commission data show that 92 percent of all ATV-related fatalities are the result of warned-against behaviors. The ATV Safety Institute has eight Golden Rules of ATV safety that address these behaviors and apply to all riders.

The ATV Safety Institute’s Golden Rules

1. Always wear a helmet and other protective gear.

2. Never ride on public roads — another vehicle could hit you.

3. Never ride under the influence of alcohol or other drugs.

4. Never carry a passenger on a single-rider vehicle, nor more than an operator and passenger on an ATV designed for two persons.

5. Ride an ATV that’s right for your age.

6. Supervise riders younger than 16; ATVs are not toys.

7. Ride only on designated trails and at a safe speed.

8. Take an ATV RiderCourse; call toll-free at 800.887.2887, or go to www.atvsafety.org to sign up or try the new free online e-course.

The All-Terrain Vehicle Safety Institute® develops rider training programs and promotes the safe and responsible use of ATVs. The ASI works to reduce crashes and injuries resulting from improper ATV use. Formed in 1988, the ASI is a not-for-profit division of the Specialty Vehicle Institute of America®. For safety information or to enroll in the ATV RiderCourseSM nearest you, visit www.atvsafety.org or call (800) 887-2887.
