California Lawmakers Back EPA Compliant Requirement for Riders of New Motorcycles

June 30th, 2010 No comments

PICKERINGTON, Ohio — A key California State Assembly committee has endorsed a proposal to require motorcyclists to have EPA-compliant exhaust systems on their model year 2011 and newer motorcycles, the American Motorcyclist Association (AMA) reports.

On June 28, the Committee on Transportation voted 8-4 to approve Senate Bill 435, introduced by Sen. Fran Pavley (D-Oxnard-Los Angeles), which would make it illegal to ride a motorcycle on the road built on, or after, Jan. 1, 2011, that doesn’t display a federal Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) label certifying the exhaust system meets sound emissions standards.

Riders caught riding model year 2011 or newer motorcycles without this stamp would be issued “fix it” tickets by law enforcement officers.

The measure now goes to the Assembly Appropriations Committee for further consideration.

“Many EPA labels are very difficult to locate on motorcycles,” said AMA Western States Representative Nick Haris. “This proposed law could lead to a flurry of tickets for motorcyclists who have legal exhaust systems on their machines with EPA labels that can’t be easily seen. It’s unreasonable to expect a law enforcement officer to easily locate an EPA label, and it’s simply unfair to expect a motorcycle owner to partially dismantle an exhaust system alongside the road to prove the label exists.

“Requiring that a motorcycle display a readily visible EPA label isn’t the correct way to address concerns about excessive motorcycle sound,” he added. “The only objective way to determine whether a motorcycle complies with sound laws is for properly trained personnel to conduct sound level tests using calibrated meters and an agreed-upon testing procedure.”

Haris suggested that concerned California motorcyclists contact their state lawmakers and urge them to reject Senate Bill 435. To do so, go to AmericanMotorcyclist.com > Rights > Issue & legislation and select “CA” in the drop down menu.

The AMA has long maintained a position of strong opposition to excessive motorcycle sound. In September 2009, the AMA developed model legislation for use by cities and states seeking a simple, consistent and economical way to deal with sound complaints related to on-highway motorcycles within the larger context of excessive sound from all sources. The model legislation offers an objective method to evaluate motorcycle sound based on the Society of Automotive Engineers’ (SAE) J2825 standard, “Measurement of Exhaust Sound Pressure Levels of Stationary On-Highway Motorcycles.” For more information, see AmericanMotorcyclist.com > Rights > Resources > Model Legislation.

Indian Day is Back!

SPRINGFIELD, Mass. – The Springfield Museums have revived Indian Day, the long-standing celebration and rally of the classic motorcycles that were manufactured in the city from 1901 to 1953. Indian Day will take place on Sunday, July 18, from 9 a.m.-4 p.m. on the grounds of the Springfield Museums at the Quadrangle.

From 1970 until 2005, Indian Day was held at the now-closed Indian Motocycle Museum on Hendee Street in Springfield. Esta Manthos, the former museum’s owner and president, spent more than four decades collecting Indian Motocycles, artifacts and memorabilia. In 2007, she donated her collection to the Springfield Museums where it is now on view in the new Lyman & Merrie Wood Museum of Springfield History.

In addition to the motorcycles on display, there will be vendors, food, a DJ, and trophies. The cost to attend Indian Day is $12.50 for adults, $9 for seniors, and $6.50 for children ages 3-17. The fee provides admission to all four Springfield Museums. Anyone bringing a pre-1953 Indian will receive one free adult admission plus a commemorative Indian Day button.

The Springfield Museums are located at the Quadrangle at 21 Edwards Street.

Harley-Davidson Factory Team Has Tough Night At Lima

Wiles, Halbert and Weidman Fill an All-Harley Podium

LIMA, Ohio (June 26, 2010) – Harley-Davidson® Screamin’ Eagle® factory rider Kenny Coolbeth placed 14th in the AMA Pro K&N Grand National Twins main at the Allen County Fairgrounds half-mile. The race was won by KK Motorcycle Supply/Mike & Eddie Adkins rider Henry Wiles, who led every lap on a Harley-Davidson XR-750 motorcycle.

Coolbeth qualified for the main by finishing second in a semi-final heat. In the main, he was unable to run higher than 13th place.

“We didn’t get settled in for qualifying, and had to go through the semi, which put us in the back row for the start,” said Craig Lager, crew chief for the Harley-Davidson factory team. “That’s a tough spot to be in on this track and we made the best of it. Kenny got around a few riders and we ran at a good pace but it was really hard to make a pass because the track is rough and visibility is not great. We need to be better off the truck at Lima and start closer to the front.”

Wiles, who also won the four-lap Dash for Cash bonus race, led from the start and stretched his lead to more than five seconds in the closing laps of the 25-lap main. King Kustoms/KK Motorcycle Supply rider Sammy Halbert was unchallenged in second place for the entire race and finished 6.564 seconds behind Wiles on a Harley-Davidson. White’s Harley-Davidson rider Matt Weidman was third, also on a Harley-Davidson.

The win at Lima moves Wiles into a tie with American Agip/Lloyd Brothers Ducati Joe Kopp in the season points standings for the 2010 Grand National Championship. Kopp and Wiles have 129 points. Zanotti Racing rider Jake Johnson is third with 121 points, followed by Halbert with 116 points, Blue Springs Harley-Davidson rider Jared Mees with 115 points, and Coolbeth in sixth place with 98 points.

The AMA Grand National Twins will next race on July 10 at the I-96 Speedway half-mile in Lake Odessa, Mich.

Final Member of AMA Motorcycle Hall of Fame Class of 2010 Named

Legendary desert racer, team manager inducted into the AMA Motorcycle Hall of Fame

PICKERINGTON, Ohio — The American Motorcyclist Association (AMA) is pleased to announce the final member of the AMA Motorcycle Hall of Fame Class of 2010: desert racer extraordinaire and one of off-road racing’s most accomplished team managers, Bruce Ogilvie. Ogilvie, a multiple Baja winner and manager of American Honda’s off-road championship efforts for years, will be among the legends of motorcycling honored at the 2010 induction ceremony at the Red Rock Resort in Las Vegas, Nev., on Nov. 19.

“So few excel at the highest levels of both competition and management, and Bruce Ogilvie was one of the greatest ever in both arenas,” said Jack Penton, AMA director of operations, chairman of the Hall of Fame Off-Road committee and a Hall of Famer himself. “Bruce’s selfless nature, unique leadership abilities, incredible skill on a motorcycle and seemingly limitless knowledge regarding motorcycle development made him not only an asset to his employer, American Honda, but to the motorcycling community as a whole. Bruce embodies the spirit of the AMA Motorcycle Hall of Fame, and we’re proud to have his memory grace its halls.”

Ogilvie, who grew up attending TT scrambles with his father, Donald, began racing in his teens. He soon became one of AMA District 37′s most accomplished desert racers, and set out to tackle one of motorcycle competition’s most challenging events: Baja. Ogilvie developed into a master Baja racer, collecting victories in the San Felipe 250, the Baja 500 and the Baja 1000 over four decades. Ogilvie was the only racer in history to win the Baja 1000 overall in four different decades, getting his last win in 2003 at the age of 51.

While still competing, Ogilvie branched into management. In 1984, he was hired by American Honda, where he coordinated the company’s off-road racing efforts, served as senior test evaluator for American Honda’s Product Evaluation Department, and developed some of the most impressive racing talent of the next generation.

Ogilvie passed away on April 13, 2009, following an extended illness.

“Bruce loved motorcycles,” said Marcia Ogilvie, his spouse of 15 years. “Everywhere he went, you could see his enthusiasm and his desire for perfection. He was so humble, honest and loyal. He never asked for any recognition, and he never expected anyone to notice what he had done. He was always quiet, but because of his accomplishments, he commanded so much respect from so many in motorcycling.

“It would mean so much to him to be here to experience his induction into the Hall of Fame,” she continued. “Because Bruce was so reserved, you couldn’t always tell if he realized how much he meant to other people, but there are thousands who know what he did for motorcycling, from those he may have just given advice to at a race, to industry leaders. To be honored for what he loved most, well, he would be really happy to know that what he did meant so much to so many.”

Ogilvie joins previously announced members of the AMA Hall of Fame Class of 2010: championship team owner Mitch Payton, AMA 250cc Roadrace Champion David Emde, off-road rights activist Clark Collins, dirt-track racer Don Castro, off-road gear pioneers John and Rita Gregory, sidecar roadrace champion Larry Coleman and legendary two-stroke engine tuner Eyvind Boyesen.

The Class of 2010 will officially be inducted into the AMA Motorcycle Hall of Fame on Nov. 19 as part of the AMA Legends & Champions Weekend. In addition to the induction ceremony, the weekend includes the 2010 AMA Concours d’Elegance on Saturday, Nov. 20, featuring some of the country’s most impressive original and restored classic motorcycles. The AMA Racing Championship Banquet closes out the weekend on Sunday, Nov. 21, where AMA Racing amateur champions of all ages will be recognized for their 2010 accomplishments.

The AMA Legends & Champions Weekend also includes the final round of the Geico Powersports AMA Endurocross National Championship Series on Saturday evening, Nov. 20. Ticket packages for the AMA Legends & Champions Weekend will also include access to the race, held at The Orleans Arena.

The AMA Legends & Champions Weekend will be held at the Las Vegas Red Rock Resort, a world-class spa, hotel and casino, featuring a range of entertainment, dining and family-friendly attractions. The facility’s expansive ballrooms will provide a stunning backdrop for the AMA Legends & Champions Weekend, which is certain to be memorable for the 2010 inductees, champions, families, friends and fans. More information is available online at RedRockLasVegas.com.

Lodging reservations can be made now at AmericanMotorcyclist.com/Accommodations. An announcement regarding ticket information will be made soon.

Located on the park-like campus of the AMA in Pickerington, Ohio, the AMA Motorcycle Hall of Fame honors individuals who have made lasting contributions to protecting and promoting the motorcycle lifestyle. Its members include those who have excelled in racing, road- and off-road riding, pushed the envelope in motorcycle design, engineering and safety, and championed the rights of riders in both the halls of government and the court of public opinion.

The AMA Motorcycle Hall of Fame Induction Committee includes nine members in addition to the chairman. There are eight committees, each representing a different aspect of motorcycling.

More information about the AMA Motorcycle Hall of Fame can be found at MotorcycleMuseum.org.

Cycle Sounds® Introduces Cutting Edge iPhone App that Automatically Controls Audio Volume with Motorcycle Speed

Lee’s Summit, MO- Cycle Sounds, LLC, a market leading premium motorcycle and motorsports audio manufacturer has done it again…They’re conquering unchartered waters as they’ve recently released an iPhone App called Cycle Sounds SCV (Speed Controlled Volume). This iPhone App was designed specifically for aftermarket audio systems fulfilling the need for a speed sensed volume adjustment. After years of developing aftermarket audio components for the powersport industry we have seen the need and are now delivering with this cutting edge iPhone App.

All you have to do is enter the maximum speed that you’ll be traveling and the volume level that you like to listen at and it will automatically adjust the volume, based on the road noise associated with the different speeds. If you’re traveling at 70 mph, the radio volume decreases by itself as you are slowing down. You no longer have to pull up to a light with the radio blasting like you were traveling at 70mph…it will automatically adjust itself to the volume you like to listen to at low speeds and vice versa.

An additional feature is that you can now use the GPS and listen to music at the same time allowing you to chart your route without cutting off the music…This is another first in the motorcycle audio market!

Ed Files, President of Cycle Sounds has over a dozen patents regarding their audio products and has recently introduced some revolutionary new products by which all others will be judged, including the new water-resistant Bagger

AudioTM lids. All Cycle Sounds motorcycle sound systems are thoroughly tested under true riding conditions…ensuring you the highest quality motorcycle audio

in the industry. These are the only audio systems designed and engineered specifically for the motorcycle market and complete systems start at only $299.00.

Cycle Sounds, LLC also produces a wide variety of audio components, not just for the Harley market, but also for sportbikes, metric cruisers, ATV, UTV and scooters. For dealers, OEM’s or distributors that are interested in adding Cycle Sounds products to their parts line up, please call (866) 427-2346 or email them at sales@cyclesounds.com. No 2010 Harley-Davidson Open Houses at York or Kansas City Plants

Harley-Davidson Motor Company will not host Open House events at the Company’s York Operations or Kansas City Vehicle and Powertrain Operations this fall, due an expanded commitment of event marketing resources to other activities, including events that focus on new demographic markets, as well as the ongoing restructuring activities underway at York.
