Harley-Davidson V-Rod Power Tops a Quick Pro Stock Motorcycle Field

GAINESVILLE, Fla. (March 14, 2010) – Screamin’ Eagle®/Vance & Hines rider Eddie Krawiec rode a Harley-Davidson® V-Rod® to win the opening round of the NHRA Pro Stock Motorcycle season at the Tire Kingdom NHRA Gatornationals at Gainesville Raceway. Krawiec defeated Rum Bum Buell rider Shawn Gann in the final round of eliminations.

Krawiec prevailed over a very quick field of NHRA Pro Stock Motorcycle riders. Eight of the 16 bikes qualified for the event with a run under 6.9 seconds, and all but three were under 7.00 seconds. Suzuki rider Karen Stoffer topped qualifying with a 6.855-second run in the last round of qualifying to set a new track record for the class, and established a new national ET record for Pro Stock Motorcycle with a 6.851-second run in the first round of eliminations. Krawiec qualified second at 6.868 seconds. His Harley-Davidson V-Rod teammate Andrew Hines was fifth in qualifying at 6.883 seconds.

Krawiec advanced to the finals with a win over Coffman Tank Trucks Buell rider Angie Smith in round one, a free pass in round two when Suzuki rider Steve Johnson fouled at the start, and a very close win over Valvoline Suzuki rider Craig Treble in round three. Krawiec used a 6.903 ET to overcome a reaction time of 0.076 seconds to get past Treble (0.011/6.971) and win by just 0.0033 seconds.

“I almost gave it all away in the third round,” said Krawiec. “I had a terrible start but used that V-Rod power to get past him right at the end. I think I won by just a few inches.”

There was no drama in the final round, as Krawiec posted a 0.045/6.899 run to defeat the 0.054/6.908 pass by Gann and take his sixth career victory.

“Once again we won by being consistent and steady,” said Krawiec who had runs of 6.864 (a new career-best ET), 6.856, 6.899 and 6.908 on the day. “We were really going to have to be on our game to win against this field. This is a great way to get the season rolling.”

Hines defeated Suzuki rider Jim Underdahl in round one, and went out in round two after leaving the line early. His reaction time in round one was 0.007 seconds.

“We were trying something a little experimental with my bike that we did not have an opportunity to test before the race, and didn’t quite have it dialed in,” said Hines. “It’s something we can fix before the next race, now that we have a baseline. This was a tremendous field, and it’s clear the other teams were doing some R&D work in the offseason. I think 2010 is going to be a very competitive season.”

With one round of the 17-race 2010 NHRA Pro Stock season complete, Krawiec leads the class with 119 points. Gann is second with 94 points, followed by Stoffer with 84, and Geico Suzuki rider Hector Arana in fourth with 76. Treble is fifth with 75 points, followed by VRoom Racing Buell rider David Hope with 58 points, and Hines in seventh place with 54 points.

The next Pro Stock Motorcycle event on the 2010 NHRA Full Throttle Drag Racing Series schedule is the inaugural Four-Wide NHRA Nationals, March 25-28, at zMAX Dragway, Concord, N.C.

2010 Royal Enfield Bullet Line Hits the States

March 15th, 2010 No comments

From a press release issued by Classic Motorworks…

Faribault, Minn – Classic Motorworks, the official importer and distributor of Royal Enfield motorcycles in the United States, today announced the arrival of the 2010 Royal Enfield Bullet model line.

“Today begins a very notable new model year for Royal Enfield in the United States,” says Kevin Mahoney, president of Classic Motorworks and Royal Enfield USA.

The year marks the complete transition of Royal Enfield’s production for the United States market to the Unit Construction Engine, Royal Enfield’s unique new power plant designed to offer the traditional appeal of a classic long-stroke “big single” engine along with modern technology for clean, reliable and maintenance-free operation. Disguised by the authentic vintage appearance of its ancestors, the newly-enhanced Bullet line now boasts hydraulic lifters, a closed-loop electronic fuel injection system and a three-stage catalytic converter.

According to the company, new 2010 Royal Enfield Bullet motorcycles will begin rolling out to dealer showrooms in most markets this month, with model availability expected to follow later this spring for the brand’s pending dealers in California.

The new 2010 model line will include a new version of the popular Bullet Military, continuing Royal Enfield’s long-standing tradition of building mainstream versions of its military contract motorcycles for western consumers. The 2010 Royal Enfield Bullet Military has been redesigned to match the acclaimed postwar-inspired form factor of the brand’s popular new Bullet C5 model. More information related to models, specs, and availability can be found online at the company’s website at www.enfieldmotorcycles.com.

Royal Enfield USA is a division of Classic Motorworks, the exclusive licensed distributor of Royal Enfield motorcycles in the United States. Royal Enfield USA operates in direct affiliation with Royal Enfield Motors, founded in Redditch, England in 1901 and manufactured and headquartered in Chennai, India since 1955.

Don’t forget to claim federal tax deduction if you bought a new on-highway motorcycle in 2009

PICKERINGTON, Ohio — The American Motorcyclist Association (AMA) is reminding riders that they may be eligible for a federal tax deduction on their 2009 taxes if they bought a new motorcycle last year.

The American Recovery and Reinvestment Act — a landmark $787 billion economic stimulus package that President Barack Obama signed into law in February 2009 — provides a deduction for state and local sales and excise taxes paid on the purchase of qualified new vehicles from Feb. 17 through Dec. 31, 2009. Qualified new vehicles include street and dual-sport motorcycles, scooters, mopeds, cars, light trucks and motor homes.

“At first, Congress was not going to include motorcycles in this bill, but the AMA and the association’s members, along with Harley-Davidson and others, persuaded our elected representatives to go back to the drawing board and fix that oversight,” said AMA Vice President for Government Relations Ed Moreland. “Congress responded, and now motorcyclists who purchased a new bike last year can enjoy the same tax savings as those who opted for four-wheeled transportation.”

Eligible vehicles must have a gross vehicle weight rating (GVWR) of 8,500 pounds or less, and cost less than $49,500. Individuals can take the full deduction if they make less than $125,000, or $250,000 for joint filers. The deduction is phased out for taxpayers with income between $125,000 and $135,000 ($250,000 to $260,000 for a joint return). Individuals don’t have to itemize to claim the deduction.

To illustrate the impact of the tax deduction, consider the case of a new motorcycle purchase of $10,500. For a 7.5 percent sales tax rate, the tax would be $787.50. The purchaser takes this deduction on the federal income tax form, reducing their taxable income by $787.50. Sales and excise taxes vary by state, so the actual savings will depend on the taxpayer’s state and tax rate.

To read the Internal Revenue Service “Questions and Answers” about the deduction, go to IRS.gov or www.irs.gov/newsroom/article/0,,id=211310,00.html.
