Motorcycle Safety Foundation Commends the California Highway Patrol, Office of Traffic Safety and Cal Trans for Statewide “Share the Road” Signs

“Look Twice for Motorcyclists” Message Seen by Millions in Golden State

IRVINE, Calif., Feb. 17, 2010 – Millions of motorists across California’s busy freeways are getting an important safety message about motorcycles thanks to the California Highway Patrol, the California Office of Traffic Safety and CalTrans. The message to “SHARE THE ROAD LOOK TWICE FOR MOTORCYCLISTS” went up in lights Feb. 11 on approximately 700 changeable message signs, commonly called “Amber Alert” signs. The one-week message will continue to run during commute hours through today.

On the 405 freeway, near the MSF’s Southern California office, where just one of the hundreds of signs is located, it’s estimated that some 250,000 vehicles pass through every day.

“The Motorcycle Safety Foundation, along with many thousands of motorcyclists, applaud the CHP, the Office of Traffic Safety and CalTrans for recognizing the importance of motorcycle safety and for utilizing this very effective medium to promote highway safety,” said Robert Gladden, director of program administration for the MSF. “We’ve received a lot of excited calls from riders, media contacts and a variety of people in the motorcycle safety community. We hope that the overwhelming positive response will encourage more motorcycle safety messages like this to be displayed in the future.”

It is more important than ever for motorcyclists to be seen by other roadway users. Since 2003, the number of motorcycles owned and used in America grew 19 percent to approximately 10.4 million, according to the 2008 Motorcycle Industry Council Owner Survey. Continuing a trend, that was a 58 percent increase since 1998, estimated then at 6.6 million.

An estimated 25 million people swung a leg over a bike and rode in 2008, the survey said. That’s a 7 percent increase, from 2003, in the number of Americans who ride but may or may not own motorcycles. Motorcycling for Americans has primarily been about recreation and the pure joy of riding. But among the reasons given for motorcycling, transportation climbed to second place in the survey, now ahead of short-distance touring.

Along with encouraging all motorists to look out for motorcyclists, the MSF strongly suggests that riders wear brightly colored, or contrasting, helmets and upper-torso riding gear so that they are more conspicuous in traffic.

The Motorcycle Safety Foundation promotes rider safety through rider training systems, operator licensing tests and public information programs. The MSF works with the federal government, state agencies, the military, and others to offer training for all skill levels so riders can enjoy a lifetime of safe, responsible motorcycling. Standards established by the MSF have been internationally recognized since 1973.

The MSF is a not-for-profit organization sponsored by BMW, BRP, Ducati, Harley-Davidson, Honda, Kawasaki, KTM, Piaggio, Suzuki, Triumph, Victory, and Yamaha.  For RiderCourseSM locations, call (800) 446-9227 or visit www.msf-usa.org/.

Is Supercross Better Without Reed and Stewart?

February 17th, 2010 2 comments

Story by JC Hilderbrand

MotorcycleUSA.com

We love ‘em, but do we miss them?

Chad Reed succumbed to injury at the Phoenix round and James Stewart pulled out after Anaheim 2. Since then we’ve seen the stadium racing series blossom into a four-way battle for the title. Ryan Dungey has watched his once-17-point advantage evaporate by missing the podium. While he suffers the pressure of leading the world’s top SX series, Josh Hill has been slugging away on his San Manuel Yamaha with a string of four second-place finishes. Now the two are tied at 123 points with Ryan Villopoto, who is building steam with his second victory, just three points behind. Even though he’s at 98 points, we’ll include Davi Millsaps in this title battle because of the notable inconsistency of these riders and Millsaps’ proven abilities with a win at San Diego.

Meteoric superstars like James, Chad and Ricky Carmichael before them do wonders. Every sport needs a hero. But at the same time, the racing gets pretty boring when you can virtually guarantee the winner. It’s a topic we’ve all heard before.

No Stewart. Four race winners (though JS was one of them). No Reed. Four-way title fight.

Now, I’m not sayin’. I’m just sayin’…

Spread the word: “Think. Ride.”

February 16th, 2010 No comments

Spread the word: “Think. Ride.”  The AMA is pleased to provide the following resources for the “Think. Ride.” public service campaign. The audio, print and web messages supplement the responsible-riding and driver-awareness videos announced in October 2009 in cooperation with actor and AMA Board of Directors member Perry King.

The new assets include full- and half-page print advertisements that promote responsible off-highway recreation, quieting excessively loud motorcycle exhausts, and avoiding drinking and riding. Four 15- to 20-second radio spots deliver the same messages, as well as encourage automobile and truck drivers to avoid distracted driving and keep an eye out for motorcycles on the road.

The AMA is pleased to announce additional resources for the “Think. Ride.” public service announcement campaign.

“One of the first steps in preserving our motorcycling rights is practicing safe and responsible riding ourselves,” said AMA Vice President for Government Relations Ed Moreland. “Second, we need to let other road users know that we have a right to be on America’s roadways, and to be alert to our presence. These print, radio and video messages shine a light on the values of AMA members and also encourage riders to think before they ride.”

The print, web, radio and video PSAs are available at AmericanMotorcyclist.com/news/story.asp?id=1752.

Like the print and audio PSAs, the series of King-narrated videos that kicked off the “Think. Ride.” campaign last year encourage proper riding gear and safe, responsible riding practices, and discourage impaired riding and excessive exhaust sound. Another video alerts car and truck drivers to watch out for motorcyclists on the road.

King, an avid off-highway and street rider, also recorded the radio spots for the campaign. Well known for playing the character Cody Allen in the 1980s television series Riptide, King has also appeared on stage and in movies, including “Slaughterhouse Five,” “The Lords of Flatbush” with Sylvester Stallone and Henry Winkler, and “The Choirboys.”

“The fact of the matter is if we want non-riders to respect our rights, we must earn that respect,” King said. “We need to be responsible for how we ride. When we accept that responsibility, we make it easier for our rights to be recognized and considered in legislative bodies and in the court of public opinion.”
