Boston Mike’s Frisco XL
This bike started life as I know it as a basket case me and a friend bought in 1994. Together with him we assembled that pile of parts into a semi respectable chopper. A little cobbled together with what we had laying around, but not a bad bike. Fast forward 15 years and I get a phone call from a friend of a friend saying the bike has been sitting for 5 years and is for sale. I made a good deal on the now seized up rusted out chopper that had been left outside for half a decade, let the tear down begin.
First was to figure out what to keep, that ended up being just the motor and frame. I’ve always had a thing for “Frisco” style bikes and had never done one so I set out to. The tank was high mounted and I made the tail section that bolts to the frame. The rear fender is a trailer job that was cut and sectioned to fit the tire a little better. I’m a big fan of S&S carbs so I dug one up to fit on there and modified an old strainer air cleaner to fit the S&S E. I also welded up a two into one high pipe out of a dresser exhaust for a little extra power.
The front end was one that was lying around the shop and I always liked the look of a wide glide with a sporty tank, getting it to fit was a little more of a project. I went with a traditional 21″ in the front and the 16″ rear both with diamond cut spokes. The brakes where more swap meet specials, two calipers of unknown origins.
The pegs where spun up in house on our lathe and the oil tank was made from a piece of 6″ aluminum pipe cut to match the pegs. The battery box was made to house the small computer battery and to incorporate the rear master cylinder which is mounted to its side. A roller skate wheel chain tensioner was made to keep the chain tight and the fender lined up. I found out why you should never use cheap skateboard wheels after mine melted on one trip around the block. The hard ramp wheel has been on there now for about a year without problems.
Since I got such a good deal on the bike to begin with I decided to go all out on the paint and chrome. All the parts that I could afford to have chrome where sent to Spacecoast plating and all the aluminum was polished up. French Kiss Kustoms got the call on the paint for a classic late ’60s candy flake paint job. As always they hit the nail on the head with a killer job. Special thanks to Mike Perry for all his help and Ace Cycles for letting me do my thing.
