Ron Galletti on the Sturgis Storms

The storms in Sturgis were unbelievable and horrifying at the same time. I was lucky enough to dodge around the storms and only had to ride on the wet roads after them. At Deadwood it stormed, but when we pulled out the storm ended; we had the chance to spend time in Saloon #10 with Gary Grubbs and Wild Bill Hickok. When I talked to the Publisher Dan Martin of Pocket Guide, he told me his car windshield was smashed and also his sunroof as well. He had dents and his car was trashed! “Bikers were running for cover and the bikes were taking the hits; it was brutal,” he said. I’m glad I missed all the bad weather. I really think it’s the Indian gods and chiefs still making us pay for taking their land. The spirits are very powerful and the Black Hills are filled with majestic power and beauty, as well as deadly weather that can turn on you at any moment.

HAIL STORM PUMMELS STURGIS FRIDAY NIGHT

August 10th, 2009 4 comments

A severe hail storm swept through Sturgis with unbridled fury Friday evening, shattering windows in cars, denting motorcycles, and creating havoc on campers. Hail the size of tangerines fell almost horizontally, fueled by driving winds as the storm left revelers at Sturgis in a state of shock and disbelief.

People scrambled to seek cover under anything they could. We had just pulled into the parking lot of the Full Throttle Saloon around 6 p.m. when the storm hit. The clouds hung low on the horizon, blotting out the sky just before the first few stones fell.
