Harley-Davidson (HOG) aficionados were not buying new bikes in the second quarter.

July 16th, 2009 No comments

The motorcycle maker this morning said net income plunged 91% to $19.8 million, or 8 cents per share, from $222.8 million, or 95 cents per share, in the same period last year. Revenue fell 27% to $1.15 billion.

Analysts were looking for earnings of 24 cents per share on revenue of 1.15 billion.

The company said this morning that it plans to cut an additional 700 hourly and 300 salaried employees as it tries to deal with tanking demand for its high-end bikes — a Harley can cost $20,000 or more. Earlier this year, Harley said it planned to cut between 1,400 and 1,500 hourly positions and about 300 salaried positions.

Global retail-unit sales of new Harley-Davidson motorcycles fell 30% in the second quarter. The company also lowered its 2009 expectations for shipments; it now plans to ship 212,000 to 228,000 motorcycles to dealers and distributors worldwide this year, which is a 25% to 30% drop from the number shipped in 2008.

Shares of Harley-Davidson were down 47 cents, or 2.7%, to $17.02 this morning.

Marriott International (MAR) also had a rough second quarter, as people stayed home.

The hotel operator this morning said net income tumbled 76% to $37 million, or 10 cents per share, from $157 million, or 42 cents per share, a year ago. Excluding charges, Marriott said it would have earned 23 cents per share, which was 2 cents better than expectations.

Revenue fell 20% to $2.56 billion, and revenue per available room (RevPAR), a closely watched metric for the hotel industry, fell 26.1%.

Marriott expects third-quarter earnings to be between 9 cents and 14 cents per share, with hotel RevPAR expected to fall by 20% to 23% in North America and by 22% to 24% everywhere else. For the full year, the hotel company said it is looking for earnings of 76 cents to 86 cents per share. Wall Street’s forecast is for 91 cents per share.

Brad Ruel, from The Wrench passes away

July 15th, 2009 9 comments

Brad Ruel 43, international custom bike builder from Brandon, FL passed away unexpectedly at his home Tuesday, July 14, 2009.  He will be missed by all who knew him.  Ron Galletti owner of Born To Ride, Tampa, FL says, “Brad was one of the good guys in our industry! He was a first class nice person to all he met or did business with.  He was self made from hard work and he turned into a pro International Custom Bike Builder that designed and fabricated one of the best motorcycle frames in the business.  He was voted most popular builder on the TV series Metric Revolution Bike Build Off. His work ethic was non stop and he was on the road across the country at many bike events every week. I remember one day many years ago when Brad talked to me about starting a motorcycle shop and wanted my input. At the time he was a motocross racer who was doing very well. Not long after that The Wrench was born and Brad never stopped working on his dream. I actually bought Brad’s very first custom bike build in 1992 and still own the bike today. Brad you left us all way too soon and you will be missed by all who knew you and loved you. Our prayers and thoughts go out to your wife Karen and family.”

S&S Cycle Announces Price Reductions

July 15th, 2009 4 comments

Viola, WI (July 2, 2009) S&S Cycle announces a reduction in price for two of their premium products, the S&S high performance clutch, and the S&S single bore tuned induction kits.

“We know these are both excellent products, and that they are superior to just about anything on the market.  We believe this price reduction will allow more customers to see just how good they really are.” Said Director of Business Development and Sales, Michael Scaletta. “S&S Cycle has always been known for big, powerful engines, but people just don’t think of us for clutches . . .Yet.”

The S&S high performance clutch features 10 steel plates and 11 friction plates to increase the number of friction surfaces available.  The S&S clutch comes with a spring set that allows the clutch to handle up to 140 horsepower, with clutch lever pull that is equivalent to stock.  Stronger springs are available for applications up to 200 horsepower.  The S&S clutch is available for 1991-’06 big twins, except 2006 Dyna® models.  The suggested retail price for these clutches has been reduced by a whopping $200.00.  MSRP for the mechanically actuated versions was $899.95, but they are now priced at $699.95.  The hydraulically actuated versions were $949.95 MSRP, and are now $749.95.

S&S single bore tuned induction kits have also been reduced in price so that MSRP on a complete system is under $500.00.  Some applications are as low as $385.00.  In addition, ordering has been simplified with a single part number.  Customers simply specify model and year of the motorcycle, the preferred finish of the intake runners, and the desired color of the filters.  Not only does the aggressive styling of the tuned induction kits look great, the tuned induction improves performance across the rpm range, with a real boost in the midrange.

Director of Product management Charlie Hadayia Jr. had this to say “The classic teardrop air cleaner has been and image associated with S&S Cycle since 1975, but the S&S tuned induction kits look so good and perform so well, that they may become another classic S&S image in time.  We’re sure that the new lower price for the S&S tuned runner and the S&S clutch will encourage customers to give them a try!”

H.O.G. MEMBERS RODE 4,373,937 MILES ON MILLION MILE MONDAY

July 15th, 2009 7 comments

MILWAUKEE – (July 2, 2009) On Monday, June 29, 2009, Harley Owners Group (H.O.G.) members around the world logged 4,373,937 miles during the club’s second annual Million Mile Monday riding marathon.

“Our members set the bar pretty high after last year’s three million miles, and we are ecstatic to have exceeded that by more than 45 percent this year,” said Benny Suggs, General Manager of the Harley Owners Group. “But more important than the number of miles ridden is that so many of our members joined together on this special day to share the experience of motorcycling.”

To put the cumulative mileage in perspective, 4,373,937 miles is the equivalent of almost 77,000,000 American football fields (goal line to goal line) or more than 70,000,000 100-meter soccer fields.

If you could ride from the earth to the moon, you’d have to make more than nine round trips to log 4,373,937 miles on your odometer.

The world’s three longest rivers – the Nile, the Amazon, and the Yangtze – share a collective length of 12,124 miles. You’d have to travel the length of each river more than 360 times before traveling 4,373,937 miles.

Riding 4,373,937 miles on an average motorcycle compared to driving a standard passenger car saves nearly 109,375 gallons of gas (or 5,609 barrels of crude oil); at $3 a gallon, that’s a $328,125 savings in fuel.

Million Mile Monday is an annual event on the last Monday of June and is open to all H.O.G. members– riders or passengers. The feat was recorded by logging into the club’s exclusive members-only website (members.hog.com), where participants registered their miles ridden on that day. For more information about H.O.G., log onto www.hog.com.

Founded in 1983, the Harley Owners Group (H.O.G.) is the official riding club of the Harley-Davidson Motor Company. H.O.G. currently has more than one million members and over 1,400 chapters worldwide, making it the largest factory-sponsored motorcycle organization in the world. H.O.G. rallies are held around the globe to celebrate Harley-Davidson motorcycle riding.

Harley-Davidson, Inc. is the parent company for the group of companies doing business as Harley-Davidson Motor Company, Buell Motorcycle Company and Harley-Davidson Financial Services, Inc. Harley-Davidson Motor Company, the only major U.S.-based motorcycle manufacturer, produces heavyweight motorcycles and offers a complete line of motorcycle parts, accessories, apparel, and general merchandise. Buell Motorcycle Company produces sport motorcycles in addition to motorcycle parts, accessories and apparel. July 7th, 2009 9 comments

The motorcycle community is devastated to learn that a weekend trip to New York turns fatal for Dan, his wife, and others.  A man that truly brought “Fun” to motorcycling now has a community mourning his loss.

He had a vision of bringing more jobs to Polk County, a plan to build a mega power sport and entertainment complex and a dream of making it a family operation.  All of this came true for Dan Dorsch.  Now it’s all in the hands of those he empowered and taught so well.
